Gordon Mobley Futurity
STONE LAKE
by Michael Cusortelli
Fastest qualifier and odds-on favorite Stone Lake earned his first stakes win in the $186,000 Gordon Mobley Futurity for Indiana-
sired 2 year olds at Indiana Grand on July 21. Ridden by Luz D. “Daniel” Martinez, the
gelding broke in sixth, but made up enough ground to cross the finish line a head in front.
Trained by Tony Cunningham for owner Patti Marshall, Stone Lake went 300 yards in :15.623, posting a 90 speed index.
Stone Lake has won all three of his races, and the $102,300 winner’s share of
the Gordon Mobley Futurity purse increased his earnings to $119,900. The gelding kept his perfect record intact despite a less-than-perfect start.
“He broke a little slow, but he started running faster and faster,” Martinez said. “Every step he took, he was just going faster and faster.”
Stone Lake was bred in
Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby
Indiana by Sheri Miller, who owns Escondido Beach. The gelding is out of Silly Chix, a winning daughter of the Takin On The Cash stallion Shazoom. Stone Lake’s second dam, the Runaway Winner mare Deceptively, was the sport’s champion 2-year-old in 1992 after winning the Grade 1 Rainbow and Kansas futurities at Ruidoso Downs.
A $15,000 yearling purchase at last year’s Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana
Speed Sale in Indianapolis, Stone Lake was coming off of a three-quarter length victory in the fourth of five Gordon Mobley Futurity trials on the Fourth of July.
“Any time you are in a field of horses like this and get on the front end like that, it’s a great feeling,” said Cunningham, who trained four of the 10 finalists, including runner-up Beach Diva. “Everyone was here to run today.”
Beach Diva (Escondido Beach-Flashin Dee Dee) finished a head behind the winner under Giovani Vazquez-Gomez for owner Sheri Miller, who also bred the gray filly.
Mitey Persuasive (Jazz Be First-Mitey Victoria) ran third for owner Ted J. Harpold. Cesar Esqueda rode the homebred chestnut gelding for trainer Randy Thompson.
ZZ Stones Ablazing (Brimmstone-
Dpi Sports Chick) was fourth and WH Imastreakinbeach (Escondido Beach-Wh Streakin Pie) fifth, in a deadheat for sixth were Strokin The Stone (Brimmstone-Invisible Power) and Beach Stone (Brimmstone-Coco Beach). Zoomin Policy (Jess Zoomin-BP Tres Seis Policy), Beach Fun (Escondido Beach- Sum Fun For Magic) and Jess Go Blue (Jess Zoomin-Miss Louisiana Blue) completed the order of finish.
