The dam of Alice Carneal is Rowena by Sumpter by Sir Archy by Diomed. This gives Lexington a breeding pattern of 3x4 to Sir Archy and a breeding pattern of 4x4x5 to Diomed.
When we talk about speed in the American Quarter Horse, we often find ourselves looking at Domino, the Black Whirlwind, because of his blazing speed. He is found in such prominent horses as Three Bars, Top Deck, Depth Charge, Leo and many more. When we look at Domino’s pedigree, we see that he has a breeding pattern of 3x4x4 to Lexington. He has a breeding pattern of 4x5x5x5 to Boston, the sire of Lexington. Thus, the linebreeding found in Domino moves the blood of Sir Archy and Diomed forward in the pedigree of Domino.
Old Billy is a foundation Quarter Horse sire and has his own ties to Sir Archy and Diomed. Old Billy is responsible for the strain of horses we call the South Texas Quarter Horse. This is the family of horses that includes Little Joe, who is the sire of Zantanon, the sire of King P-234. Old Billy is the great grandsire of Peter McCue, the famous racehorse and foundation sire. Peter McCue is by Dan Tucker by Barney Owens by Martin’s Cold Deck by Old Billy.
The standard pedigree for Old Billy shows that he is by Shiloh by Von Tromp by Thomas’ Big Solomon by Sir Archy by Diomed. Some pedigree researchers believe that Shiloh is not a sire line descendant of
Sir Archy, but that his sire is Von Tromp
by Thomas’ Big Solomon by Badger’s Sir Solomon, who is sired by Tickle Tobey who is by Alfred by Matchem by Cade by The Godolphin Arabian.

in EQUUS magazine August 2018, that Von Tromp is by Thomas’ Big Solomon
by Sir Solomon by Sir Archy. Frank Talmadge Phelps, in his article “Sir Archy and the Later Diomeds” that appeared in the February 1953 issue of The Western Horseman, states that Sir Archy is the sire of several sons that were good sires of Quarter Horses. This list included Bacchus, Sir Solomon and Copperbottom. The end of
the paragraph that explains this states, “The great Quarter Horse sire Little Billy (another name for Old Billy), if we accept the older version of his pedigree, traced to Sir Archy.”
Shiloa, the dam of Shiloh, has her own Sir Archy blood. She is by Union by Arab by Sir Archy. The dam of Union is Rarity by Sir Archy. This gives, if we use the old established version of Shiloh’s pedigree, a breeding pattern of 4x4x4 to Sir Archy.
The dam of Old Billy is Ram Cat by Steel Dust, who is by Harry Bluff, a son
of Short’s Whip by Kentucky Whip by Whip. We also know that Steel Dust carries the blood of Janus through his sire Harry Bluff. Kentucky Whip is out of Young Speckleback by Randolph’s Celer by Meade’s Celer and Young Speckleback’s dam is Old Speckleback by Meade’s Celer, a son of Janus by Old Janus. Thus, Young Speckleback has a breeding pattern of 3x3 to Janus by Old Janus. The dam of Harry Bluff is Big Nance by Jackson by Timoleon by Sir Archy. This give Old Billy a breeding pattern of 5x5x5x7 to Sir Archy. Jackson is out of a mare
by Kentucky Whip who is out of Young Speckleback, giving Harry Bluff a breeding pattern of 3x5 to Young Speckleback and a 6x6x7x7 to Janus by Old Janus. This shows the common bond provided by Old Janus and his full brother Blank appearing in the pedigrees of Old Billy and Lexington.
