Shue Fly resembled Nancy M right down to the spot on her side, a “patch of roan hair” that is found on many of Nancy M’s foals. Shue Fly gives us some interesting food for thought about how the
Thoroughbred and American Quarter Horse have come down through history together. The American Quarter Horse has relied
on the Thoroughbred to be a key factor in the improvement of the breed, and that is very evident in the Army Remount Service that was formed in 1908. The original goal of the Remount Service was to purchase good horses for the cavalry. Then the program started providing stallions for ranchers and farmers to use to breed their mares, with
the military getting to pick the horses they wanted from the foals produced. The Army Remount Service would buy these foals, and that gave those involved in the program added income for the ranch or farm.
The Remount Service not only provided good horses for the cavalry, but it improved the horse population in general. The stallions they used were Arabians and Morgans, but mostly Thoroughbreds. The book War Horse by Phil Livingston and Ed Roberts provides us with a look at some key remount stallions that fit into Quarter Horse racing as a part of some influential horses they provided in the program. We can start with Shue Fly and her official pedigree. Her broodmare sire Booger
pedigree shows she is by Cowboy P-12 by
Yellow Jacket by Little Rondo by Lock’s Rondo, and Yellow Jacket is out of
Barbee Dun by Lock’s Rondo, who is by Whalebone, a son of Old Billy. The dam
of Cowboy P-12 is Roan Lady by Stalks by John Wilkens. Roan Lady is out of Bonnie Wilkens by John Wilkens by Peter McCue, giving her sire a combination of Old Billy from the South Texas Quarter Horses and a cross to the Old Billy sire line stallion Peter McCue. The dam of Shue Fly in this version of her pedigree is Lady Luck by Booger Red by Roncocas by Iroquois. Booger Red is out of a mare by Barney Owens. The sire of Peter McCue is Dan Tucker by Barney Owens.
The unofficial pedigree for Shue Fly reports that Lady Luck is by Erskine Dale, a son of Sweep who is by Ben Brush and out of Pink Domino by Domino, giving the pedigree a Domino influence. The dam of Lady Luck in this version is Nancy M by Jack McCue and out of Fanny by Jack McCue by Peter McCue. This gives Shue Fly a pedigree combination of Domino and Peter McCue. Many believed this to be the correct pedigree and they told that
