P. 12

FROM THE PRESIDENT
   Dear Members,
To understate the obvious, we are living in interesting times. COVID-19 has shut down businesses around the world, including racing.
Thankfully, as of this writing, businesses are beginning to open albeit with restrictions and so has racing. Our Governor has allowed
racing to resume without fans for the time being. It’s certainly strange to watch our horses run in front of an empty grandstand and with the people allowed to be there wearing masks but we’ll take it.
This is an incremental first step but we’re certainly happy to get going again. Hopefully, fans will be allowed to attend soon.
Meetings were held with the Horsemen, track managements, and the Breeders in May to discuss what to do with the purse monies left over from the cancellation of the last three weeks of the Sunland Park meet and the total cancellation of the SunRay Park meet.
These meetings were extremely productive and the spirit of cooperation was very encouraging. In the end, it was agreed
to share the funds with Ruidoso and the Downs at Albuquerque. Some of the funds were left in reserve for Sunland Park and SunRay for their next race meets. The Racing Commission subsequently gave their blessing to the plan.
As you all know, the vast majority of the purse structure for New Mexico racing comes from our share of gaming revenues. With the casinos being closed, we all realize that purses will suffer. How much of a decrease remains to be seen. Hopefully, as the virus seems to be getting under control, the casinos will open in some capacity soon. The Breeders
are committed to bolster the New Mexico bred stakes so that they can maintain their black type status – very important to all New Mexico breeders.
All of us in this industry are optimists by nature. We’re all tough and resilient as well. We’ll get through this difficult time together.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and let’s go win some races.
Tom Goncharoff
