Susans Violette pulled away in the home- stretch and scored a convincing 4 1/2-length victory in the December 28, 5 1/2-furlong New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap (R) for New Mexico-bred distaffers at Sunland Park.
Racing for owners Steve Stewart and Bennie L. “Chip” Woolley Jr., who also trained the 4-year-old filly, Susans Violette stopped the timer in 1:04.04 while earning her third stakes win and the $60,000 winner’s share of a $100,000 purse. Enrique Gomez rode Susans Violette.
Susans Violette was bred by Michael E. Malouff Jr. The filly is one of eight winners from 14 starters sired by Stellar Rain. A half- brother to the stakes-placed Street Cry (IRE) mare Cosmic Girl, Stellar Rain has sired the earners of more than $458,000. The stallion
is owned by Wendy Davis of Tucson, Arizona, and he stands for a $1,500 fee at Terry and Nan Lane’s TNL Farm at Bosque, New Mexico.
Susans Violette is also one of two winners from as many starters foaled by Bruisen Susan, a winning daughter of the Proud Truth stallion Proudest Romero who ran third in the 2006 Manhattan Beach Stakes at Hollywood Park. Her second dam, Creme de Violette, was a winning daughter of the Riva Ridge stallion
Vindaloo and a full sister to the multiple stakes placed Michael’s Raptor.
Susans Violette’s third dam, the Darby Creek Road mare Cyard, won the ’86 Kindergarten Stakes (R) for Ohio-breds at Beulah Park. The filly traces back to her fourth dam, Benched, a daughter of the Turn-To stallion Cyane and a half-sister to stakes winner Noble Card and T.V. Card.
Susans Violette was shortening in distance off of her fifth-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Waltzing Attila, in the 6-furlong, $145,000 New Mexico Cup Distaff Sprint Championship (R) at Zia Park on October 27. Raced exclusively in New Mexico, the filly has earned $252,888 from 11 outs, and her six wins include the 2018 New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap (R) at Sunland Park and New Mexico Cup Oaks Championship (R) at Zia Park.
Susans Violette was sent to post as the 5-2 second choice in the field of 10 and returned a $7.60 win mutuel. Sidewinder Sally, a
34-1 longshot, finished second to complete a $152.40 ($2) exacta.
Ballinouttacontrol finished third, a
head behind Sidewinder Sally. Orogrande, Attilas Gal, Sky Vue, Flight Song, Lesstalkmoreaction, African Heat, and Shug’s Best completed the order of finish.
Sidewinder Sally is a homebred 5-year-
old daughter of the Mr. Greeley stallion Mr. Gold Mover campaigned by Robert Driggers and Ben Lee Ivey. The chestnut mare has won four of 15 starts, and the $20,000 runner-
up share of the New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap purse pushed her bankroll to $164,800.
A 6-year-old Prince Of Fame mare owned by Clifford C. Lambert Sr., Jimmy Powers, and Rebecca Powers, Ballinouttacontrol
has won nine of 47 races and has earned $202,229. Ballinouttacontrol’s resume includes a second-place finish in the July 28, $50,000 Lincoln Handicap (R) at
Ruidoso Downs.
