REACHER I6
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The Classic in honor of the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders
and Horsemen was held on May 19, with the participation of nine runners at three years
of age at a distance of 400 yards over a fast track with a purse of $388,000 pesos (approx. $20,115 U.S.).
The race favorite Reacher 16 was the winner of the 2019 Easily A Possum Classic as well as the Mexican Futurity in 2018.
A disorderly race at the start led to consequences valued just by the stewardess. The occupants of positions six to nine were squeezed in the first movements, with the main culprits being Chief Moonflash and Tenayas Kid. This affected Reacher 16, who was behind and was about to lose her balance. It was her advantageous position in the race and the skill of her rider, Martín Hernández Bautista, which allowed her to recover quickly and continue in the contest, establishing a close duel with the colt Carters Calyx, on a trajectory towards the inside rail, but always being in front of the group.
When crossing the goal, Reacher 16 was 1/2-length in front of her nearest rival,
who was well led by Mario Alberto López Marmolejo. Reacher 16’s race time was :19.51 for a 95 speed index. In this way, she also secures the second race of the three that make up the Mexican Quarter Horse Triple Crown for three-year-old individu-
als - with the first being the
Easily A Possum Classic.
She will get her chance to
consummate this feat in the
Derby of the Americas on
July 28, perhaps moving to
the select list of those “triple
crowned,” with Nowurtalkin
the last to get it in 2011.
After the competition, the stewardess reviewed
the race and disqualified Moonflashing from fifth
to eighth place and Chief Moonflash, from seventh to ninth place.
For Reacher 16 (Inseperable-Tinys Corona Queen, by Corona Cartel), this became her fifth victory in eight starts, putting her record at 5-2-1 with total earnings of more than $925 thousand
pesos. She is a part of Cuadra Victoria M.C. and is trained by José Ravel Baltazar Aguilar.
As already mentioned, Carters Calyx (Carters Cartel-Confidential Run) placed in second, under the control of Mario Alberto
López Marmolejo. He belongs to Cuadra Los Arrallanes and was saddled by trainer Luis Eduardo Flores Jiménez.
Chocazoom (Azoom- Spin The Pages) was third under Yair Daniel Báez Soto for owner Cuadra Tlalpan and trainer Juan Carlos Barrera Sánchez.
Im The Survivor (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Lady Elaina) was fourth and was followed by Victorease (One Famous Eagle-All About Ease), Tenayas Kid (First Down
Dash-Lady Tenaya), Saint Genevive (Coronado Cartel-Fast Red Rose), Moonflashing (First Moonflash-Streakin Flair) and Chief Moonflash (First Moonflash-Diamonds N Rainbows). Traffic Traveler was scratched from the race.
