I am quite late in writing this “thank you” letter . . . but there is a good reason why:
When my husband, Melvin E. Hat- ley, passed away in 2016 and then our last Quarter Horse, Lil Bro Big Streak, was claimed early in 2018, I no longer had any horses. Thus, my subscription to your great magazine was not renewed.
Just a few days ago, my next-door neighbor brought me the October 2018 issue of Speedhorse; her mother was going through old issues and thought this issue was an article about my husband, Melvin. Yes, I’m sure back in June 1980, Melvin and I both read and re-read the great review of Melvin’s life with the horses, but that was years ago, and things happen, memories fade and life, if possible, goes on. What a delight to be able to read it again!
So, I am now writing to you, dear Speedhorse friends, to thank you! Thank you! Thank you! For your reprinting
the “Judgement Call” article that was so correctly and beautifully written by Lyn Jank! She wrote exactly the happenings of waaay back when and it was a delight to read. Great memories emerged . . . happy times all along the way.
I’ve not heard from Lyn in years and would love to thank her for writ- ing this great article. If you have her address or phone number, please let me know. I would love to contact her.
Again, thank you so much for pub- lishing this article again after almost 40 years. My hope is that many of
the newcomers to the Quarter Horse business read the article and took heed to his wisdom.
Sincerely,
Judy E. Hatley

The photo on page 177 shows Zillions (Timeto Thinkrich-Binkie’s Honey TB, New Policy) winning the 870-yard 1985 El Ocho Setenta Handicap-G3 under jockey James Brooks at Los Alamitos. Foaled in 1981, Zillions was bred by M. T. Guler in Canada, out of 1974 Breeders’ Sales Stakes winner Binkie’s Honey TB. Gene Chambless purchased Zillions as a yearling at the 1982 Los Alamitos Summer Sale for $6,700. Trained by Larry Kleve, the brown stallion won seven of 33 starts and earned $80,443 racing exclusively at Los Alamitos. Beside the El Ocho Setenta Handicap, he also won two additional 870-yard events in the 1985 Marathon Handicap-G2 and Table Tennis Handicap on his way to earning 1985 Champion Aged Stallion honors – making him the first 870-horse to be accorded Championship status. “He’s been an exceptionally nice horse from the very beginning,” said Chambless. “It was apparent that as a two and three year
old he wanted more distance. That meant we had to hold him back until he was older in order to enter him in the 870-yard races.”
After Zillions retired from racing at five years of age, Chambless partnered on the Champion with Abigail Kawananakoa in 1987 until she acquired sole ownership of him in 1989. Zillions went on to sire 14 winners and 100% money earners from 17 starters.
