Bobby Dan Crenshaw Mem,
TACTFUL-TB
by Stacy Pigott
The Bobby Dan Crenshaw Memorial on July
28 at Ruidoso Downs was an evenly-matched affair with half of the entrants Quarter Horses
and the other half Thoroughbred. In the end, the Thoroughbred Tactful got the best of the Quarter Horses, drawing clear to win the 1,000-yard stakes.
Breaking from post position 10, Tactful let the quick-starting Quarter Horse Im Royal Quick take the lead. Jockey Macario Rodriguez settled Tactful into second. Forced to run six-wide around the turn, Tactful maintained his position and used a powerful stretch run to take the lead away from Im Royal Quick and win by 1 1/4 lengths in :53.029.
Trained by Martin Orona, Tactful (Bertrando- Scare Tactics) bounces back and forth between Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse competition for owner Rogelio Carrasco Sr. In his last three starts, Tactful won a $6,250 claiming race at 870 yards, won a $10,000 claiming race at 4 1/2 furlongs,
and won the 870-yard Tricky Dust Stakes by 6 1/4 lengths. A $10,000 claim in 2011, he has won seven of 30 starts and $178,213.
Tanner Thedford rode Im Royal Quick (Royal Quick Dash-Im Brendas Baby) for owner Jose Orquiz and trainer Alonso Hernandez.
Sugarintheevening-TB (Benchmark-Insurprise) was third for owners Brad and Kim Bingham and Karen Hicks. Weston Martin trains the 4-year-old gelding, who was ridden by Miguel Hernandez.
Shigeo-TB (Grey Memo-Hokulani)was fourth, followed by Supercarls Remedy-TB (Congrats- Sweer Remedy), Tango Blue (Favorite Trick- TB-Oodles Of Cash), Prince Carson-TB (Lord Carson-Princess Little B), McQueen (Southern Cartel-Chicks For Sure), Bye Bye Jess (Dashin Bye-Shes Jess Special), and Kudos For Quick Dash (Royal Quick Dash-Kudos For Sweets-TB), who was disqualified from eighth to tenth for interference at the start.

If Letty Bail Regis Out continues on her current path, people may wonder how she lost her first race. Since finishing third in her 2011 debut, the 3-year-
old filly has been perfect in four starts, most recently capturing the July 28 California Breeders Debutante Stakes at Los Alamitos.
Sent away the second choice behind favored Tac It To Heart, Letty Bail Regis Out broke seventh and quickly vied for the lead with the favorite. Letty Bail Regis Out raced on the rail, while Tac It To Heart was on the outside. Letty Bail Regis Out and jockey Eduardo Nicasio ultimately defeated Tac It To Heart and rider Eulices Gomez by a half-length in :17.509.
Letty Bail Regis Out broke her maiden last August, and Francisco Vallejo took over her training for 2012. They are perfect together, Letty Bail Regis Out capturing two claiming events prior to this race.
EG High Desert Farms owns and bred Letty Bail Regis Out from stakes-placed Artesias Merridoc. From 11 starters, Artesias Merridoc has seven win- ners, including multiple stakes winner Merridoc Hawk and stakes-placed Chicky Do Run Run. The second dam, La Primera Del Ano Derby-G1 winner Artesia, was the 1998 Broodmare of the Year, and her foals included Champion Artesias Specialchic.
Tom Bazley trains Tac It To Heart (Tac It Like A Man-Let’s Eat Lunch-TB) for Spartan 300. Earlier this year, Tac It To Heart finished second in the James Smith Memorial Handicap.
Tac Out (Check Him Out-Separate Tac) fin- ished third for jockey Cruz Mendez, owner Anna MacPherson, and trainer John Cooper.
Completing the field were Shesnowsall (Snowbound-TB-Serious Intensions), Check The Dreamer (Check Him Out-Take A Dream), Bet
It Snows (Snowbound-TB-Bet She Flys), Nimble (Walk Thru Fire-Shrug), OC City Girl (First Down Dash-Shirleys Strawfly), and Chickitita (Tac It Like A Man-The Devine Miss Em).

It takes a lot of patience to wait nearly two years to bring a horse back to the races. But that’s what John Cooper and Ron Hartley did with Ronsepi. The
gelding rewarded them with a victory in the July 28 California Breeders Sprint Stakes at Los Alamitos. Ronsepi and jockey Cruz Mendez beat the rest
of the field out of the gate in the Sprint and led throughout the 350 yards. Cash Him Out chal- lenged Ronsepi to make it close, but the 4-year-old gelding held on to win by a head in :17.667.
Hartley bred Ronsepi, and Cooper trains him. Ronsepi finished second in his only start at 2 in 2010.
“All the credit in the world for this horse goes to trainer John Cooper,” said Hartley. “This horse had an injury, and John rested him for a year and a half. He’s been pretty good since he’s come back this year.”
When Ronsepi returned to the races this past January, he ran fourth before stringing together three victories. He finished third and second in two allowance races and then attempted his first stakes in the Sprint.
Hartley said that Rondini, the dam of Ronsepi, was bred to Walk Thru Fire this year. The mare has produced two winners from two starters. Rondini is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Ancient Ruler.
Juan Humberto Moya’s Cash Him Out (Separatist- Cash Her Out) finished second for jockey Gregorio Arriaga and trainer Arnoldo Pulido. Cash Him Out also finished second in the 2010 Ed Burke Juvenile.
Third-place Fire Is On (Walk Thru Fire- Micheles Alibi) is a multiple stakes winner owned and bred by Daniel Reynoso. Eduardo Nicasio piloted the 6-year-old gelding for trainer Jose Flores.
Rounding out the field were Little Bit Of Baja (First Down Dash-BCR Pale Moon), BF Farm Boy (Hawkinson-Shirleys Strawfly), How Goes It (Separatist-How Good), Forrest Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Chicks Tell), and Imrockn (Check Him Out- Mini Rock).
