 Queen City Dash Stakes
FIvE STAR CARTEL
by Tracy Gantz
Owner Blas Juarez Sr. and trainer Frank Randazzo Jr. need to keep Five Star Cartel in stakes company. The 5-year-old gelding has won three of four races in
2012, all three victories in stakes, while his lone loss came in an allowance race. He most recently captured the July 25 Queen City Dash Stakes at River Downs.
The Queen City Dash was scheduled for July 18, but it had to be canceled and rescheduled because of a severe thunderstorm that swept through the Cincinnati area. The postponement made no difference to Five Star Cartel. He took charge right out of the gate under jockey Rafael Hernandez and won by three-quarters of a length as the 2-1 favorite. His time of :17.826 broke the track record of :17.894, set in 2009.
Five Star Cartel won the IQHRA Dash For Cash Stakes and Tom Tucker Memorial Stakes at Fairmount Park earlier this year. His Queen City Dash victory put him over the $100,000 mark in earnings.
Unraced These Eyes produced Five Star Cartel for breeder C.D. Kemp. The mare, a daughter of Mr Eye Opener, has one other winner from three starters.
Jess Cashin In (Mr Jess Perry-Feet Down First), owned and trained by Jorge Gonzalez, finished sec- ond, with Gerardo Garrido aboard. The 6-year-old gelding won last year’s Queen City Dash.
Gonzalez also owns and trains third-place Ethics Aside (Mr Jess Perry-Daring Difference). Jeremy Garcia rode the 6-year-old gelding in the Queen City and also to victory in the Roble Rojo Bonus Challenge Stakes at Hialeah earlier this year.
Completing the field were First Time Favorite (Bigtime Favorite-First Audition), Gallant Ways (Make It Anywhere-Corona Bikini), Hez Tricky Too (Okey Dokey Dale-Eyes Tricky Too), Takin The High Road (Okey Dokey Dale-Take After Me), Count The Menace (Executive Menace-Countess Rare Bar), and I Is It (Executive Menace-Lone Legacy). Take Off Reb was scratched.
Bob Morehouse Stakes
CS ARC LIGHT
by Tracy Gantz
Never underestimate a Quarter Horse at Canterbury Park bred by the mother and daughter team of Sylvia and Camelia Casby and out of
the mare Easanon. That combination has been lethal over the years, and it scored again when CS Arc Light captured the July 26 Bob Morehouse Stakes.
At odds of more than 8-1, CS Arc Light broke sixth and last, but he and jockey Ismael Suarez Ricardo quickly made up ground, almost immedi- ately racing into second alongside leader Western Fun. Those two horses raced together throughout the 400 yards, with CS Arc Light grabbing the lead to win by a neck in :20.440.
Vic Hanson trains CS Arc Light for the Casbys. Third in the 2010 Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity and 2011 Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Derby, the 4-year-old colt was winning his first stakes.
The Casbys bred CS Arc Light from their mare Easanon, who won the 1999 Canterbury Park Derby for Sylvia Casby. Each of the mare’s seven starters has “CS” and “light” in its name. Six have won, and five of them are stakes winners. All four of the mare’s previous stakes winners won the Minnesota Futurity at Canterbury, with CS Flashlight and CS Night Light multiple stakes winners there.
Robert and Julie Petersen’s homebred Western Fun (Tres Seis-Southern Fun) held on for second,
a nose in front of Steven Pribyl’s Six It Up (Tres Seis-Biddies On A High). Thomas Wellington rode Western Fun for trainer Edward Hardy, while Mark Luark piloted Six It Up for trainer Amber Blair. Western Fun is multiple stakes-placed. Six It Up won this race in 2010 and was second in 2011. He also won the 2010 Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby.
Completing the field were Dutch Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Lil Bit Dutch), Explosive Guns (Zoomin For Bux-Garters N Guns), and Dashing Big Bud (The Big Tipper-Dashing Leah). Dangerous Guns was scratched.
By By JJ Stakes
HEZA PERFECT STORM
by Stacy Pigott
Heza Perfect Storm broke his maiden and scored his first stakes win all at the same time on July 28 at Ruidoso Downs when he won the $20,000 By
By JJ Stakes for 2-year-olds.
Trained by Fred Danley, Heza Perfect Storm had
started four times prior to the ByBy JJ, with a pair of third-place finishes in futurity trials his best efforts. In the By By JJ, Heza Perfect Storm found the per- fect conditions to reach the winner’s circle. Ridden by Bonifacio Perez, Heza Perfect Storm broke inward from post position eight and bumped slightly with Southern Note in the seven hole. Perez got the geld- ing straightened out quickly and got down to busi- ness, chasing down early leader Balderinas Surprise. In a driving finish, Heza Perfect Storm crossed the wire a neck in front of Easily A Gent in a 400-yard time of :20.074. Balderinas Surprise crossed the wire third but was disqualified and placed fifth for lug- ging out and interfering with Ms James.
Heza Perfect Storm earned $12,000 for owner/ breeder David Barrett, who also bred the dam, Fame Us Katie. The young Dash Ta Fame mare has also produced stakes winners Captain Jacksboro and Fast Movin Vic, and stakes-placed Mighty Famous Vic.
Danley also trains runner-up Easily A Gent (Jacksboro-Easily Authorized), who is owned by Rita Danley. Macario Rodriguez was in the saddle.
Ping Pong Patty (Jesse James Jr-Madie Rae) was placed third. She is owned by Shawn and Neale Edwards and Robert Stratton, trained by Paul Jones and was ridden by Ricky Ramirez.
Completing the field were Ms James (Jesse James Jr-Arbor Mist), Balderinas Surprise (Rabbits Rainbow- Miss Balderina), Jesse Fame (Jesse James Jr-Famous Chapelle), All Eyez On Me (Chicks A Blazin-Lil Majorette), Dashin Ace (Dash Ta Fame-Ace Crystal Charm), and Slew By You (Dash Ta Fame-Slew A Po-TB). Southern Note was scratched.
