Flare For Toby Handicap
JESS RAVIN
by Tracy Gantz
California has had more than its share of off tracks this winter, but a wet/fast/sealed race- track didn’t deter Jess Ravin. The 4-year-old filly
took her fourth stakes by capturing the Feb. 10 Flare For Toby Handicap for 3 year & older fillies and mares at Los Alamitos.
Sent away the 3-5 favorite, Jess Ravin broke on top from the 3-gate and never relinquished the lead. She and jockey Jesus Ayala flew to the wire to win by a 1/2-length in :16.685 for the 330 yards.
“She was running a little unsure, probably because of the wet track,” said Ayala, who has ridden her in her last 11 starts. “Sometimes she’s a little nervous in the starting gate, but she did everything right during warm-ups and prior to the race.”
Enrique Gonzalez’s EG High Desert Farms owns Jess Ravin, and Yanet Rodriguez trains her. The filly previously won the 2016 Las Damas Handicap-G3, La Pacifica Handicap, and Vandy’s Flash Handicap. Jess Ravin has now earned $120,441 from 13 outs.
You and Me Partners bred Jess Ravin in Oklahoma from Jessica Ravin, who finished second in the 2004 New Mexico Derby Challenge-G3. Jessica Ravin has produced seven winners from 10 starters, including stakes winners Jess Cuervo (her top earner) and Paintyourownwagon.
Summer Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Summer Love Song), ridden by Rodrigo Aceves, and All Right Now (FDD Dynasty-Already In Love), piloted by Cruz Mendez, dead-heated for second. Jaime Gomez trains Summer Dynasty for Dutch Masters III.
The 4-year-old filly placed in three stakes last year. Matthew Fales trains All Right now for his parents, Carolyn and Ralph Fales. It was the 5-year-old mare’s first stakes-placing. Completing the field were First N Final (Favorite Cartel-Tiny First Down), Deceptive (Foose-Fool The Boys), and Bring Me Home (Stel Corona-Bring Me Joy). S
Rillito Derby
FLYINGFORUNCLESAM
by John Moorehouse
Flyingforunclesam soared into black type, winning the $15,000 Rillito Derby by 3/4-length at Rillito Park on Feb. 26.
Home-bred by Kirk Goodfellow, the three-year- old gelding held off heavy favorite Cowboys Dynasty to reach the winner’s circle in his first stakes race. Flyingforunclesam now holds two wins in eight starts, including a victory in his first start in the trials to last year’s Ruidoso Futurity-G1.
Trained by Cody Reynolds, Flyingforunclesam drew the inside starting position and led by a
head at the first call, widening his advantage as
he entered the stretch. Cowboys Dynasty tried to chase him down, but jockey Mauro Salcedo still got Flyingforunclesam to the wire first.
Flyingforunclesam finished his 350-yard trip
in :17.263, posting a career-best 105 speed index. Goodfellow banked an $8,250 payday, which nearly tripled the gelding’s total bankroll to $12,910.
Goodfellow also home-bred Dreams For Lyndsie, the dam of Flyingforunclesam. She won the Down Under Futurity at Laurel Brown Race Track and finished second in the Utah Sires Fall Futurity-RG3. Dreams For Lyndsie has pro-
duced 12 starters, including top earner/stakes placed Cashinginmydreams and stakes winner Lookingforagoodtime. Flyingforunclesam becomes Dreams For Lyndsie’s second stakes winner.
Cowboys Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Mexican Radio) finished second for owner/trainer Alvaro Monteverde under Jesus Osuna. Eyeaseagull (Eyeameasy-Miss Benton Blue) placed third for owner Armando Perez-Gomez and trainer by Ricardo Saldana under Emilio Tapia. Sniper 1 (The BountyMan-
Secret High), Discrete (TR Dasher-Secret Goer), Jessa Music (Mr Jess Perry-Keep Themusicplayin), Go Seis (Tres Seis-Go Veva) & Lil Boom Boom (Heza Motor Scooter-Special Instinct) completed the field.
