The photo on page 143 shows Whosleavingwho and jockey Joe Badilla returning to the winner’s circle after the gelding won his first stakes victory in the inaugural running of the Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1. The 2001 event boasts the largest purse ever for the race at $260,500.
Bred by Gordon R. Haslam in Vermont, Whosleavingwho (Chicks Beduino-Lil Bit Rusty, Easily Smashed) was purchased at the All American Sale for $40,000 by Kim Kessinger and Jim Geiler.
As a two year old, Whosleavingwho broke his maiden in his first out, then finished the year with $143,009 and a second in the Los Alamitos Million Juvenile. As a three year old, Whosleavingwho captured eight victories including the above mentioned Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1, the Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap-G3, and the Dillingham Handicap.
He was named 2001 AQHA Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding after earning $241,061. The gelding continued on as a four year old, winning three of six starts including the Champion of Champions-G1 and Go Man Go Handicap-G1. That year, he earned another $381,193 and was named the 2002 AQHA Champion Aged Horse and Co-World Champion.
It was only the second time that the AQHA declared Co-World Champions, the first being in 1951 with Maddon’s Bright Eyes and Monita. Whosleavingwho earned his World Champion title with Streakin Sin Tacha, who earned more money than he did that year. However, Whosleavingwho did beat Streakin Sin Tacha in the Champion of Champions. Thus, the association awarded Co-World Championship titles.
In total, Whosleavingwho earned $1,334,842 with a record of 23(10)-1(9)-2(2) from 47 starts racing from 2000 through 2006.
“I always told my kids to surround themselves with good individuals,” stated Kessinger, who said he looks at his children and his horses in somewhat the same light. “I believe that makes a world of difference in how your life turns out.” Kessinger and Geiler surrounded Whosleavingwho with two of the best trainers in the business – Paul Jones and John Basset.
When Whosleavingwho retired in 2006 at eight years of age, Kessinger said, “He’s taken us for a great ride.”
This year’s $220,402 Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1 was run Feb. 11 and was won by Imaqtpie.
