Joyce Loomis-Kernek: 2017 PRCA Legend
The 2017 Ram Prairie Circuit Finals
Rodeo, hosted by Chisolm Trail Prairie Circuit Committee, was held Oct. 19-21. Top cowboys and cowgirls from Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska competed for cash prizes and spots in the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping and bull riding. The event also recognized Joyce Loomis- Kernek as their 2017 PRCA Legend. Joyce, who
is a contributing writer for Speedhorse, attended New Mexico State University and competed on the rodeo team in roping, goat tying, and barrel racing. She was won the Miss Rodeo New Mexico pageant and advanced to and won the 1963
Miss Rodeo America competition in Las Vegas. Her horse War Leo Dude took her to her first National Finals Rodeo (NFR) where they won the 1969 World Champion Ribbon Roper and Flag Racer titles. War Leo Dude also became a World Champion Barrel Racer and won the NFR. Joyce won the inaugural 1974 AQHA World Show’s Senior Barrel Horse Championship and Honor Roll aboard her gelding Man O War Leo.
She is a director of the WPRA and NRHA and conducts clinics in many countries. In 2007, she helped form the Barrel Futurities of America in Brazil. She also helped organize that country’s trainers’ association, the ABTA Treinadores, and in 2011 became their first Hall of Fame inductee.
She was featured on the Animal Planet TV Network in 2009 when she was named Top Breeder of Barrel Horses; was inducted into the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum and the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association Halls of Fame; helped establish Cowboy Church services at the AQHA and AQHYA World Shows; was the dean of the Christian Horseman College in Benbrook, Texas; judged the Miss Rodeo Pageant in Las Vegas; and much more. Joyce continues to speak and teach at various events, such as Equitana USA, and has added clinician, author, and dean of the Christian Horseman College in Benbrook, Texas, to her list of experience.
Don Trout Passes Away
Don Eugene Trout, 75, of Sanger, Texas, passed away July 26 following a battle with cancer. Trout was a renowned professional photographer for over 40 years and his trademark fish logo is well known. He served
as the official show photographer at events for many different breed associations and was also the designated photographer at many barrel events. He is survived by his wife and business partner, Debbie, as well as by many other family members and friends.
Judge Cash Dies
Leading sire Judge Cash passed away on
Sept. 18 at the age of 30. The son of Dash For Cash and out of Mary Mito by Mito Paint TB, began his career on the racetrack where he won or placed in 25 of his 34 starts. He won three stakes events, was second or third in three others, and was a finalist in the 1989 All American Futurity-G1. He is the sire of over $1.3 million on the track, including 3-time Graded stakes winner and New Track Record setter Your So Awesome. He is the sire of over $1.3 million in the barrel arena, including 2002 NFR qualifier Quick Judge and 6-time NFR qualifier and WPRA/PRCA Horse of the Year Judge Buy Cash. And, he is the sire of more than $2.1 million as a barrel broodmare sire, including multiple NFR qualifiers and the great barrel horse An Oakie With Cash.
