LQHBA Breeders’ Derby-RG3
MR FAST MALLARD
by Michael Compton
Notching the first stakes win of his career, Mr Fast Mallard proved too quick for
nine rivals in the $179,806 LQHBA Breeders’ Derby at Evangeline Downs on Dec. 17.
Ridden by jockey Ubaldo
Luna, Mr Fast Mallard surged
to a narrow lead after the start
of the 400-yard test. Sent off
at odds of nearly 9-1, Mr Fast
Mallard edged clear in the lane
and despite drifting in, scored
wire-to-wire by 3/4-lengths at the finish, holding at bay a furious late rally from TF Jess Me to prevail. The eighth-fastest qualifier from two trials to the Derby, he stopped the timer in :19.646 in the final and earned a speed index of 94.
The $80,414 winner’s share of the purse increased his lifetime bankroll to $232,317. A homebred for Jose Luis Perez Aguirre, Mr Fast Mallard improved his record to 15-3-1-7. In addition to his stakes tally, he was third in the
2021 LQHBA Louisiana Million Futurity-RG1 and he was fourth in the 2022 Mardi Gras Derby at Louisiana Downs for trainer Kenny Roberts Sr.
“I felt that if he broke well, he would have a good chance,” Roberts said in an interview with StallioneSearch.com. “Tonight, he left well and kept it up. He’s matured a lot from last year; it was nice to see him win
this after running third in the Futurity last year.” Bred in Louisiana, Mr Fast Mallard is out
of the stakes-placed mare Miss Mallard Struts. She placed third in the 2016 French Quarter Stakes and was a finalist in the 2015 LQHBA Sale Futurity-RG1 and in the 2016 The Treme Derby-RG3. She has produced winners from two starters.
Runner-up and fastest qualifier from the Nov. 26 trials, TF Jess Me (One Sweet Jess-Miss
Mallard Too) captured his trial and delivered another sharp effort in the final for owner Tex Mex Racing. Trainer Adrian Huitron had jockey Jorge Garcia in the irons. He was coming off a four in-a-row win streak.
Second-fastest qualifier Apollitical Tornado (Apollitical Blood-A Real Tornado), also a winner of his trial, rallied late to finish third under jockey Modesto Pina for owner Rubios Landscaping and trainer Wendy Garcia.
Ultimo Alex (Inseperable-Cindys First CD), Put Me N Coach (Carters Cartel-Allizoom), Dianetoseparatefromu (Inseperable-Coronas Concierge), Mr Crawfish (Prospect To The Top-JLS Crawfish Pie), Louisiana Tequila (The Louisiana Cartel-Newport Lily), Blessher Sweet Heart (Jet Black Patriot-Reckless Fast Dash), and Flying Adelia (Apollitical Blood-Flying Marguerita) completed the order of finish.

RF FAST DASH N JESS
by Michael Cusortelli
CB Racing Stables’ RF Fast Dash N Jess scored his first stakes victory in
the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Derby-RG3 for state-bred sophomores at Evangeline Downs on Dec. 17.
Prepped by trainer Edgar
Espino with jockey Arturo
Alvarez aboard, they broke
fast from the 2-post and
started in second. By the first
stretch they had taken the
lead, and by the mid-stretch they had gained a 1/2-length lead, and they maintained that margin of victory to the finish line. RF Fast Dash N Jess covered 400 yards in :19.654, his final clocking earned him a speed index of 94.
The $45,000 winner’s share of the purse from his first lifetime stakes score increased his earnings to $89,151, of which $74,533 has been banked from seven outs this year.
RF Fast Dash N Jess was extending his win streak to three, coming off of two allowance
race wins. Campaigned exclusively in Louisiana, the gelding has won four of 14 races.
RF Fast Dash N Jess was a $20,000 purchase by Robert Maxwell at the 2020 Louisiana QHBA Yearling Sale. He was claimed by
his current connections for $10,000 at Delta Downs on August 20 of 2022.
RF Fast Dash N Jess was bred by Tim and Jennie Rogers of Rogers Farm.
The gelding is out of stakes placed Fast Dash
N Deb. She placed second in the 2009 Billy Montgomery Evangeline Downs Stakes-RG3 and third in the 2008 Lee Berwick Futurity-RG1 and earned $198,179 during her racing career. She
has produced 100% winners from her 10 starters including two stakes winners.
Bye Corona (Open Me A Corona-Corona Dashin Bye) pocketed the $17,000 runner-up share of the purse to bring his earnings to
$57,560 from 11 races under jockey Juan Pulido. The gelding is owned by Alexander Carreon Mendez and trained by Fernando Valdez. He was a $15,000 claim at Delta Downs on July 30.
LRH Heart Of Glass (Five Bar Cartel-LRH Heartofanoak) finished third, 1-length behind RF Fast N Dash, while banking the $10,000 third-place share of the purse for her owner, Carlos Campos. Trainer Josue Huitro had jockey Ricardo Hernandez Jr. in the irons.
RM Super Angel (Super Sonic Patriot- Fashion Report) ran fourth and was followed by Heza Louisianna Man (Jess Louisiana Blue-I Want To Dash Fast), Patriotic Trump (Jet Black Patriot-Princess Lil Bit), San Lorenzo Dash (Heza Fast Dash-San Lorenzo Eagle), Railroad Jimmy (Freighttrain B-Ha Chi Mama), and Never Sweet (One Sweet Jess-Never Neutral).
