and the Ruidoso Derby and she was the 1959 Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. Then came Bailey’s Vandy out of Sally Do It
by Johnny Do It by Leo. He won three futurities including the Illinois State Fair Futurity. The next one is a little different in Vandy Reed, who was out of Lady Joe Darks by Joe Reed P-3 by Joe Blair. She won the 1953 Kansas Futurity.
To this point we have looked at the Vandy/Joe Reed nick that focused primarily on Leo, but there is another interesting pattern to this nick in the mare Pokey Vandy by Vandy. This mare was a stakes winner of three stakes, including the Autumn Championship and the Gold Bar Stakes in 1955, the year she was named
the Champion Mare. She was out of Beggar’s Pokey by Beggar Boy by Bonnie Joe. Bonnie Joe was the sire of Joe Blair. Another stakes placed Vandy foal was
Tiger Van, who was second in the 1962 Intermountain Futurity. He was out of Little Peach by Beggar Boy.
Some of the other stakes winners sired by Vandy show that he crossed good with other bloodlines. They include Mr Walt, the winner of the 1964 Colorado Wonderland Handicap. He was out of Barbara L by Patriotic. Vandelita won the 1960 San Mateo Invitational Handicap, and she was out of Candy Dee by Ace
Of Diamonds. Candy Dee was the dam of Vancent Dee by Vandy. She was the
dam of Dee Mount, the dam of World Champion Dashingly. Pokey Pat was the winner of the Santa Clara Invitational Handicap, and he was out of Nancy Baby by Benson’s Hickory Bill. Vandy’s Question was the winner of the 1951 Pawhuska Three-Year-Old Derby, and he was out of Lorane Question by Question Mark. Bright Bardee won the 1966 New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby, and she was out of Bar Bright by Bright Bar by Three Bars. She was the dam of multiple stakes winner See Him Go, including the New Mexico State Fair Futurity. Vanoka was the winner of the 1965 Uranium Downs Derby, and she was out of Miss Wewoka by Boomer. Horny Bill won the 1960 Bay Meadows Handicap, and he was out of Miss Ginger McCue.
We have now seen that Vandy and Garrettsmisspawhuska had one of the
great nicks from the past. Just think, if
they had used embryo transfer how many good runners they might have produced. But, I have one more interesting bit of information to pass on and that has to
do with Vandy Lou Miller, a daughter of Vandy and a mare named Gloria Lohman by Leo. She was stakes placed in the 1962 Southeastern Oklahoma Derby. She became a broodmare, and she is the fourth dam
in the tail female line of Remember Me Rose. So, now we see that the pedigree of Remember Me Rose was founded on one of the great nicks of Vandy with Leo mares.
Their foals earned $249,625. The Vandy/ Garrettsmisspawhuska runners were a great nick that placed first, second or third in 74 stakes races from 1954 to 1961.
Now for the genetic side of this nick. We have seen that the foals from Vandy and Garrettsmisspawhuska had a breeding pattern of 3x5x5 to Joe Blair. This can be viewed as linebreeding and it is a matter of recycling the genes, we went from Joe Blair into the foals being produced from this cross. When we view it as a part of the nick, we use the term blood affinity. A blood affinity comes from a common ancestor on both sides of the pedigree. A great example of stallions nicking with each other include Leo, Three Bars, Top Deck and Depth Charge, with Domino serving as the blood affinity as they all carried his blood. In this case, Joe Blair is the blood affinity in this cross of Vandy and Garrettsmisspawhuska.
But that isn’t the end of it. When we look at the stakes sire record of Vandy, we see that he sired horses that won $790,867 with 110 ROM, 15 stakes winners and
14 stakes placed runners. Some of his other stakes horses show the nick with Leo. One of them was Aunt Judy out of Aunt Amie by Leo. Aunt Judy won six stakes including the Kindergarten Futurity
