SUNLAND HONORS HORSEMEN WITH AWARD
(Apr. 3) Sunland Park ended their 2022 meet with a special tribute to the recipients of the Bob Haynsworth Sportsmanship Award. This year’s award was presented to horsemen at the track recognized for excelling in racing, for their years of commitment, and for tutoring young people to keep racing alive in New Mexico. The award winners are Robert Cappellucci, Jimmy Collier, Gary Cross, Fred Danley, Cliff Lambert, Gerald Marr and Paul Smith.

(Mar. 23) Jockeys and Jeans named Caesars Entertainment Inc. Senior Vice President of Racing Joe Morris an official Jockeys and Jeans Ambassador. His role will be to advocate for wounded jockeys’ financial support, to help in jockey recovery, and to make known the inherit dangers of racing. Morris joins the Executive Director of the Indiana Horsemen’s Protective and Benevolent Association and Jockeys and Jeans 2021 Man of the Year Brian Elmore,
and Hall of Fame Jockeys Ron Turcotte, Laffit Pincay Jr., Chris McCarron, Jorge Velasquez, Mike Smith and Javier Castellano as a Jockeys and Jeans ambassador. Morris was instrumental in Caesars Entertainment becoming the named sponsor of the Jockeys and Jeans Fundraiser last summer at Monmouth Park, and they
will be the named sponsor for this summer
at Churchill Downs. Jockeys and Jeans is a volunteer group dedicated to raising funds
for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF). Founded in 2014, Jockeys and Jeans has raised over $2 million for the charity which is currently helping 60 jockeys, of which around 40 are paraplegic or quadriplegics and whom are provided a stipend of $1,000 a month from the PDJF.

(Mar. 27) The 2021-2022 Chariot World Championship was decided at the Golden Spike Event Center at the Weber County Fairgrounds in Ogden, Utah. The winners were Circle Da Wagons and BD Illusion with driver Clay Walker at the reigns for the Jenson, Ropelato & Padgett team.
OWNER/TRAINER TORRES SUSPENDED
(Mar. 28) Owner/trainer Juan D. Torres was summarily suspended by the New Mexico Racing Commission after his trainee Parker Dam (Seperate Interest-No Arizona, Foose) tested positive for Clenbuterol. The 2-year-old filly finished third in her only start in the trials to the West Texas Futurity at Sunland Park
on March 11. Parker Dam did not qualify to the futurity finals but was the fastest qualifier
to the West Texas Juvenile. Torres has been excluded from all areas of the grounds under the jurisdiction of the NMRC. All horses owned, trained, or under the care of Torres are ineligible to be entered or start in any race in that jurisdiction, and all transfers and sales of horses trained, owned, or in the care and custody of Juan D. Torres must be done in accordance NMRC regulations.
HISA RULING
(Mar. 31) U.S. District Court Judge James Wesley Hendrix issued a ruling in National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) v. Black. Hendrix said the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) is constitutional under current precedent and that there is a need to clarify the matters at issue in the lawsuit. HBPA and affiliates argued that Congress could not delegate the regulation of the horseracing industry in America to an unelected body of private citizens, called HISA. “The Horsemen are correct that HISA creates
a novel structure that nationalizes regulation of the horseracing industry.... Although the

SCOTT MARTINEZ RETIRES
(Apr. 3) Longtime Los Alamitos Race Course photographer Scott Martinez retired from racing at the conclusion of the April 3 card. Martinez had been the photographer at the California track going back to 1987. Scott took over when his father, Milt Martinez, retired after having been the track photographer since 1970. “Through my time (at the racetrack)
