Johnny Trotter is a man of such few words that people take note when he does speak.
“Trust me, it is great if Johnny Trotter wants
to talk because his words are gold because he doesn’t use many of them,” said Dale Day when he emceed the awards ceremony honoring the 2018 Champions. “So, when he speaks, listen to him.”
People should also listen because Trotter knows how to breed, raise, select and race a good horse. His horses gave him plenty of opportunities to speak at the awards ceremony. Trotter was named Champion Owner, One Sweet Racy won Champion Aged Mare and Bodacious Eagle took home trophies as the World Champion, Champion Aged Horse and Champion Aged Gelding.
Bodacious Eagle makes Trotter positively loquacious. He respects the gelding’s incredible abilities, and he was especially thankful for the many people who helped develop the horse.
“This horse has been in the hands of three different trainers (Blane Wood and Jaime Gomez in years previous to 2018, and the Joiner family), and all of them have done an excellent job,” said Trotter.
Trotter also thanked “the guys back at the barns, the grooms who are not here tonight. After the race, the next morning they tell you whether he cleaned up or not, how he felt going back to the barn.”
The Bodacious Eagle story actually began at the 2012 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale. Trotter wanted to buy the dam, Bodacious Dream, but found himself in a bidding war with Bobby Cox.
“Butch (Wise) was bidding for me over the phone,” Trotter recalled. “She kind of slowed down at $40,000 and then she took off and we went to $100,000 just like that. I said, ‘Who’s bidding against me?’ He said, ‘Since $40,000, it’s just been you and Bobby.’ I said, ‘Well, hell, let him have her. He’s going to buy her. I’m just costing him money.’ ”
Cox got the mare for $107,000, but Bodacious Dream also had some embryos
in that sale. Two hip numbers later, Trotter purchased an embryo by One Famous Eagle out
Bodacious Eagle and Cody Jensen win the Champion of Champions-G1.
