Breeder: Julianna Hawn Holt Owner: Scott Bryant
Trainers: Mike Joiner & Justin Joiner Jockey: G.R. Carter Jr.
2018 Record: 7-6(2)-0-0, $1,213,754, Los Alamitos Two Million F.-G1, Golden State Million F.-G1, fnl. Ruidoso F.-G1
Flash And Roll has never lost at Los Alamitos. Given the caliber of competition
at the California track, that is quite an accomplishment and one that earned her two titles—Champion 2 Year Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Filly.
The filly garnered two million-dollar futurities at Los Alamitos, which brought
her earnings to $1,213,754. Even though she sold for $200,000 at the 2017 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, she was a bargain.
Julianna Hawn Holt bred Flash And Roll in California and sold her at the sale. Owner Scott Bryant purchased the filly, but he quickly gave credit to the Joiner family. Father and son Mike and Justin Joiner trained Flash And Roll.
“The Joiners picked her out,” said Bryant. “She was one of the last ones in the sale.”
Mike trained Flash And Roll at Ruidoso Downs, and Justin took over at Los Alamitos.
“This filly’s been a really nice filly,” said Mike at the awards ceremony. “We just couldn’t ask her to do any more than she’s already done. She sure made us look good.”
Flash And Roll began her career at Ruidoso in the trials for the Ruidoso Futurity-G1. She won her trial, qualifying for the final, but
she broke outwardly in the final and finished unplaced. She also won her trial for the All American Futurity-G1, but “it went from a very nice headwind to a really large tailwind,” said Bryant, and she didn’t qualify.
At Los Alamitos, Flash And Roll also won trials for two major futurities. She qualified for and won them both—the Golden State Million Futurity-G1 and the Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1.
G.R. Carter Jr. rode Flash And Roll throughout her 2-year-old season.
“She’s one of the fastest horses I’ve ridden,” Carter said. High praise indeed coming from someone who has piloted so many good ones.
In the Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity, Flash And Roll got the jump on her rivals immediately, winning by an easy 1 1/2-lengths.
The race capped off a huge weekend for Justin Joiner, who also saddled Bodacious Eagle to take the Champion of Champions-G1.
Flash And Roll and G.R. Carter Jr. win the Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity.
