Johnny Trotter’s year in 2018 went beyond World Champion Bodacious Eagle. He also campaigned Champion Aged Mare One Sweet Racy.
Sunflower Supply Co. bred One Sweet Racy in Missouri and consigned her to the 2015 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Trotter credited trainer Blane Wood with helping to select One Sweet Racy.
“For several years I’d looked at the catalogue, pick something out, and have Blane go look at them,” said Trotter. “I’d say, ‘If you like them, buy them for me.’ He bought this filly.”
Trotter paid $110,000, a price well worth it since One Sweet Racy has earned $387,423. “They did a real good job with her in her
3-year-old year,” Trotter said of Blane and his son, Trey.
At three in 2017, One Sweet Racy broke her maiden at Remington Park and finished second in the All American Derby-G1 at Ruidoso Downs. Trotter then tested the waters at Los Alamitos, where she returned in 2018 for a banner season under the tutelage of Christopher O’Dell.
“I sent her out there to Chris, and he did a real good job with her,” said Trotter.
Trey Wood and Mike Joiner handled One Sweet Racy in her first two 2018 starts, at Remington. She ran second in the Decketta Stakes-G3 and third in the Juno’s Request Stakes-G2.
Once at Los Alamitos, One Sweet Racy hit her stride. She tuned up with an allowance victory and qualified for Challenge Championship night by capturing the Boehringer Ingelheim Los Alamitos Distaff Challenge-G3.
After a second in the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1, One Sweet Racy was part of the AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship-G1 that had to be declared a no contest because of a gate malfunction. She broke through the gate and grabbed a quarter.
“We had to patch that up a little bit and work on it,” said O’Dell.
The work paid off, as One Sweet Racy won the rescheduled race by a nose, and then ran second in the Charger Bar Handicap-G1 on Jan. 6, 2019.
“We’re real proud of her,” said Trotter, “and look forward to raising some good horses out of her.”
One Sweet Racy wins the Los Alamitos Distaff Challenge-G3.
