Tarzanito won a Championship despite encountering more trouble than Professor Harold Hill claimed was in River City in The Music Man. Most horses with as many “bumped both sides,” “bumped break,” and “pinballed break” wouldn’t win a race, let alone a Grade 1 that led to being voted 2018 Champion Aged Stallion.
His courage is what made Tarzanito never give up, however. He ultimately defeated a star-studded field in the Go Man Go Handicap-G1 at Los Alamitos, proving to fans what owner Dr. George Fallieras of A1A Racing LLC already knew.
“We think our horse is very talented and wonderful,” said Fallieras in accepting Tarzanito’s trophy. “We’re just really appreciative that he had the opportunity to demonstrate that.”
Patricia Visscher bred Tarzanito in California, and Yanet Rodriguez trained him in 2018 for Fallieras. Eddie Garcia was his regular pilot, and at the awards ceremony Fallieras told a story of how much Garcia liked Tarzanito.
“We gave him some time off before the Vessels trials,” said Fallieras. “He (Garcia) breezed him in the morning, and he called me up and said, ‘George, this horse took off, and I swear to God it’s the fastest horse I’ve ever ridden.’ ”
Considering how many good horses Garcia has ridden during his career, it was high praise indeed.
Tarzanito started twice at Los Alamitos before getting that break prior to the Vessels Maturity-G1. He qualified for the Vessels with
a sparkling victory in his trial and finished third in the final and the subsequent Spencer Childers California Breeders Championship-RG1.
Next came the Go Man Go, which attracted the likes of Champion Hold Air Hostage, 2016 Champion of Champions-G1 winner Zoomin For Spuds, and 2014 Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1 and 2016 Vessels Maturity-G1 winner He Looks Hot.
It wasn’t a clean trip. Tarzanito and Zoomin For Spuds bumped each other at the start. Garcia rallied Tarzanito, who responded to catch leader Hold Air Hostage, repel closing Royaltys Authority, and win by a neck.
Tarzanito earned a berth in the Champion of Champions-G1, and he followed the Go Man Go with a third in the Robert L. Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship-G1.
Tarzanito wins the Go Man Go Handicap-G1.
