AS MACHO si 105, $294,736
Mexican Champion
Breeder: Arturo A. Siller Berain Owner: Ruben Falcon Vidal
Trainers: Ismael Parra Martinez, Victor Jarillo Sanchez
Jockey: Jose Angel Ambrosio Medina
AS Macho was not only named the 2018 Mexican Champion, he has the distinction of having earned the most money in the history of the Mexican Hipodromo de las Americas racetrack. As a 2 year old last year, AS Macho earned a record 5,051,697 pesos.
Dr. Arturo A. Siller Berain bred AS Macho at his Rancho Agua Linda in Mexico, crossing the Texas-bred Check
Him Out mare Check This Star Out with the California-bred Corona Cartel stallion California Cartel. Berain consigned AS Macho to the 2017 Selecta Yearling Auction at the Hipodromo de las Américas, and the gelding was a buy-back at 50,000 pesos ($2,800 U.S. approx.). AS Macho was later sold privately to Luis Simoni Merlo on
the recommendation of trainer and former jockey Ismael Parra Martinez.
Martinez trains AS Macho for Cuadra Falcon and unveiled the gelding in a maiden race March 25. AS Macho wasted no time getting to the winner’s circle, as he captured the 250-yard race by 1 1/4-lengths.
AS Macho won seven of nine races last year and finished second in the other two, the Mexico Futurity and Subasta Selecta Futurity-RG3. In each of those, he lost by only a nose. He was the fastest qualifier
in the Garanones Futurity, with 210 trial participants, and in the Desafio Crianza Mexicana Futurity, with 71 trial participants.
In the 300-yard Garanones final on July 15, AS Macho broke on top. After only 100 yards, it was obvious that he had taken charge. Ridden by Jose Angel Ambrosio Medina, AS Macho scored by 1 1/2-lengths in :14.924 over One Rainbow. Mirror Mi Rorra finished third.
The Garanones is for Mexican-breds sold at the Hipodromo de las Americas.
“He is the best that I have chosen for these races, which have become more difficult each year due to quantity and quality of the participants,” said Martinez following the race.
In the Nov. 11 Desafio Crianza Mexicana Futurity final, with Medina aboard, AS Macho again grabbed the lead quickly. He sailed home in the 350-yard event to win by a 1/2-length in :17.205 over Dancer Chimpa, with Bye Bye Mom third.
AS Macho wins the Garanones Futurity.
