Paul Jones has trained plenty of Champions throughout his career. He can add another South American Champion to that list. In 2018, Haras Portofino sent Corona Jumpim MRL from his native Brazil to Los Alamitos
to compete in the Bank of America Challenge Championship-G1. It was a wonderful example of cooperation between the North and South American Quarter Horse industries.
The trip came about because of Corona Jumpim MRL’s excellent racing in Brazil, which earned him the title of 2018 South American Champion. Corona Jumpim MRL won both his starts at the Jockey Club de Sorocaba
in Brazil last March, including the Bank of America South American Championship Challenge. That qualified him to the Challenge Championship, at Los Alamitos on Nov. 17.
The Challenge Championships have brought other horses from South America in the past. The best example has been South American Champion Jake Gold BR, also trained in the U.S. by Jones.
Jake Gold BR is bred along similar lines as Corona Jumpim MRL’s dam, Ipanema Gold. Both are by the multiple graded stakes-winning Gold Medal Jess. Ipanema Gold is out of a daughter
of Chicks Beduino, who appears as the paternal grandsire of Jake Gold BR’s dam, Charlotte Bryan. Corona Jumpim MRL is by Corona For Me.
The colt started 4 times in 2018 at
Los Alamitos, including in the Challenge Championship. Though he did not win, he came on to run a good 2nd in a 330-yard allowance race on Oct. 27. He was also 5th in the Dec. 8 First Down Dash Handicap.
