HOOSE COOSE
by Michael Cusortelli
Making his first-ever start at the distance, Hoose Coose led at every call in the $20,000 California Breeders’ 550 Sophomore Stakes for 3
year olds at Los Alamitos on July 29.
Hoose Coose covered 550 yards in a hand-timed
:27.300, and his winning margin was 3/4-length from Newport Coaster. Jesus Ayala rode the gelding for owner J. Francisco Diaz and trainer Lindolfo Diaz.
”Jesus told me that he wanted to break a little too fast, but the ground kind of broke from under him,” Lindolfo Diaz said. “He said he started rolling when he leveled off.
“I don’t know if he’s a straight handicap horse at a shorter distance,” the trainer added. “I don’t know if he can beat that kind. Maybe we’ll look at another high claiming race for $40,000.”
Hoose Coose was bred by Martha “Mimi” Wells and is out of 4-time winner Hope To Cope. The mare has produced 100% money earners from five starters, including top earner Phone Tag, win- ner of the 2013 AQRA Open Spring Futurity at Turf Paradise and the 2015 Barbra B Handicap at Los Alamitos.
