Calif. Breeders’ Debutante S.
SCHOLARLY
by John Moorehouse
Scholarly became a multi-stakes winner, making a driving finish to take the $25,000 California Breeders’ Debutante Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 29.
Trained by Roberto Dominguez, Scholarly broke from the outside gate in the seven-horse field and was running fourth as she entered the stretch. Rider Eduardo Nicasio urged the filly into a huge closing kick, as she caught up to her foes and beat Tough To Figure by a nose at the wire. The pre-race favorite at less than 2-1 odds, Scholarly finished her 350-yard trip in :17.785, registering an 88 speed index.
Scholarly became the 13th competitor to log two stakes wins in the history of California Breeders’ Champions Night. She won last year’s running of
the Freshman Fillies Stakes, before coming back to win the Debutante, which is for sophomore fillies who are bred in California. Scholarly has made 12 career outs and now has a $47,750 career bankroll for owner Kolleen Ledgerwood.
Edward C. Allred bred Scholarly and owns her dam, 2-time winner Now You Comeat Noon. The mare has produced 100% money earners from four starters. Scholarly is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Tough To Figure (Walk Thru Fire-Big Jan) out- nodded Ilikethewayshewalks at the wire as part of a blanket finish to secure second place. Allred owns Tough To Figure, a Scott Willoughby trainee who had Gary Boag aboard. Steve D. Burns DVM, owns Ilikethewayshewalks (Walk Thru Fire-Septacular), who is trained by Michael Casselman and was ridden by Jesus Ayala.
A Lil Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Separate Thoughts), Remembering Florence (TR Dasher-Sables Bono), Are Those Real (One Sweet Jess-Fames Easy) and Sweet Aguila (One Sweet Jess-First Magical Dash) completed the field.

“She’s been very honest and always gives you her best,” said Zamudio. “She has futurity trials ahead.”
