The 10 finalists for the John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge came from the June 11 qualifying races at 350 yards. It was the sorrel colt One Danny who got the fastest time of :17.325, followed by Azoomin Jamie at :17.389.
Three weeks later, the ten qualifiers returned to the track to determine who would collect the main part of the purse of $509,963 pesos (approximately $28,287 US) assigned to the race. Of course, the two aforementioned were given a preference in wagers, especially Azoomin Jamie who closed with 0.80 odds due to being the winner of The Prize Clasico.
It was a start with absolute cleanliness, all seeking to cross the finish line first, with One Danny leading under by Eddi Cuellar. Nevertheless, from the right of the gate and
groping the muddy sur-
face with agility, the grey Azoomin Jamie took the lead in the race. When everything seemed definite in favor of the filly, from the back came the black colt Gulf Coast Streaker with surprising speed. He seized the contest in the final 50 yards, decid- ing it in his favor with a 3⁄4 lengths margin.
Jockey Jose Manuel Cisneros had an outstanding performance, and he knew how to ride the winner, finishing the distance in :17.28 for a speed index of 97.
