With 18 three-year-old runners bred in the United States, two qualifying races were held for the prestigious AQHA Mexico Derby Challenge, with the 10 best times at 400 yards qualifying to the finals. The best performance in the trials was for the sorrel My Moonflash, a daughter of the great runner and stallion First Moonflash, clocking in at :19.39; then came Beer Wagon with :19.47. Both were winners of their respective heats.
The finals took place on July 2 with a prize of $571,157 pesos ($31,681 US approximately), where the spotlights focused on Beer Wagon, who was the favorite to take the fight with odds of 1.80. In addition to having won his quali- fying heat, he was first in the AMCCCCM Clasico on May 21 and second in the 2016 AQHA Mexico Juvenile Challenge.
At the start of the race, all entries moved well over the muddy track, with Beer Wagon (#8) assuming control of the competition through the center of the track. Immediately, the sorrel Tempting Splash Dash accepted the challenge and established a fierce competition that was solved in favor of the red bay Beer Wagon by the difference of a neck. Beer Wagon was under the control of rider Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez, and his race time was :19.34 for a 100 speed index, his highest to date.
