Louisiana Classic-RG2
JLS MR BIGTIME
by Tracy Gantz
Setting track records is nothing new for
JLS Mr Bigtime. As a 2-year-old in 2010
at Evangeline Downs, he broke the 400-yard track mark twice, in his trial for the Louisiana QHBA Futurity and—lowering his own record—again in the final. The gelding set another track record, this time for 440 yards, at Delta Downs on July 14 when winning the Louisiana Classic-RG2.
The accomplishment was
even more impressive given
that JLS Mr Bigtime bobbled
slightly at the start. Longshot
Heza Gonna Dash led early,
but JLS Mr Bigtime, the 1-2
favorite, closed ground steadily
under Raul Ramirez Jr. and got
up in the final strides to win
by a head over Blue Louisiana
Jolla. JLS Mr Bigtime’s clock-
ing of :21.303 gave him a 105
speed index and broke the
previous record of :21.346.
The $60,000 he earned in the Classic raised JLS Mr Bigtime’s lifetime bank- roll to $947,797. Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding in 2010, JLS Mr Bigtime also finished second in the All American Futurity-G1 and Lee Berwick Memorial Futurity-RG1 that season. At 3 in 2011, he captured the Delta Downs Louisiana- Bred Derby-RG2, ran second in the
Remington Park Invitational Championship-G1, and finished third in the all American Derby-G1.
Darrel Soileau trains JLS Mr Bigtime, a son of the stallion Bigtime Favorite,
for owner-breeder JLS Speed Horse Ranch Inc. The geld- ing’s dam, Psalmist, scored all three of her victories at Delta. She has produced one other starter and winner, JLS Making Trouble.
Elroy Potts Jr. and Watson Land and Cattle’s Blue Louisiana Jolla (Jess Louisiana Blue- Somekinda Rainey) won the 2011 Delta 550 Stakes. Jarrod Deschamp rode the 7-year-old gelding in the Classic for trainer Elroy Potts Sr.
Louisiana Rangler (Jess Louisiana Blue- Rangler Print) finished third under Bobby Ransom. Louis Lee trains the 5-year-old gelding for Kim McKenzie. In his last start, Louisiana Rangler won the 2012 Delta 550.
Completing the field were Heza Gonna Dash (Heza Fast Dash-Iwanna Dash), Louisiana Panther (Panther Mountain-Iwanna Dash), Martini Mountain (Panther Mountain- Glitz Gator), Heza Jodys Toast (Heza Fash Dash-Jodys Toast), Fast Dashin Dude (Heza Fast Dash-First Down Delight), and De Toast Devin (Toast To Dash-Bell Perry). Zupers Quick Dash was scratched.

Louisiana Juvenile Stakes
LOGANS MOUNTAIN
by Tracy Gantz
John Hamilton demonstrated why he is Delta Downs’ leading jockey when he scored a riding triple on July 14, Louisiana Showcase Night. He captured the Live Oak Stakes and Vinton Stakes as well as the Louisiana Juvenile Stakes, the latter aboard Logans Mountain.
Shortly after the gate opened in the 350-yard Juvenile, Fance Oak Tree jumped out to the lead. Hamilton and Logans
Mountain raced with him,
and the two battled it out
in the middle of the track. Logans Mountain ultimately pulled away and won by a neck over fast-closing Smokin Buddy in :17.531. Fance Oak Tree held on for third.
Triple M Farms LLC bred Logans Mountain and entered him in the 2011 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Yearling
Sale. He went through the ring as a $14,000 buy-back and began his racing career for his current owner, Armando Rivera Fernandez.
Fourth in a maiden race at Remington Park, Logans Mountain won his trial for the Lee Berwick Futurity-RG1 with Hamilton in the irons. His trial time did not qualify him for the Berwick, and he competed instead in the Juvenile, which gave preference to horses
with the fastest non-qualify- ing time for the Berwick.
Logans Game, the dam
of Logans Mountain, won the 2006 Louisiana Breeders’ Lassie Futurity-RG2 at Delta and was second in the 2006 Mardi Gras Futurity-RG2. The mare has produced one other starter, three-time stakes winner Logans Dash. Logans Mountain’s third dam is multiple stakes winner Shesa Screamer.
Randy Edison rode Smokin Buddy (Game Patriot-Streakin Angelica) for owner Gordon Racing LLC and trainer Danny Eldridge. Still a maiden, Smokin Buddy has now finished second in three consecutive races in four life- time starts, all at Delta.
Alejandro Moya’s Fance Oak Tree (Oak Tree Special-Fance Loretta) is also a maiden, with two seconds in four starts prior to the Juvenile. Gilbert Ortiz rode the gelding, who is trained by Jeff Acuna.
Completing the field were Jazz Under The Oaks (Oak Tree Special-Dynojazz), Dashin Forward (Look Forward-Go Dashing Teal), Dashin Tee Pie (First To Shine-Tee Pie), Jesfastasapanther (Panther Mountain-Jes A Game), and Jet Black Runaway (Jet Black Patriot-Genre). Jettin For A Fortune and Y Knot were scratched.
