RED HOT ZOOMER
by John Moorehouse
It didn’t take very long to make history at Canterbury Park. Red Hot Zoomer won the first- ever 110-yard race ever held at Canterbury as part
of that facility’s annual Extreme Race Day on July 21, sprinting to the finish line a half-length ahead of TRS Dashin Rona.
Red Hot Zoomer covered that short distance in :7.034, in an event that ended so quickly that the track announcer simply said, “Yep, that’s it,” after Nik Goodwin brought Red Hot Zoomer across the wire. Red Hot Zoomer was a bit slow coming out of the gates, but promptly charged to the front of the field en route to her fourth win in 11 lifetime starts. Terry Thorson’s 3-year-old filly improved to 2-1-0 in four starts thus far during the 2012 season. Edward Ross Hardy trains Red Hot Zoomer.
Jim Pitts bred Red Hot Zoomer and owns the filly’s dam, Prairie War, who has produced eight starters among 14 total offspring. Red Hot Zoomer becomes the third stakes winner in the brood. The others include Valiant War Hero, a half-brother to Red Hot Zoomer who set the 300-yard world record last year at Sunland Park en route to victory in the West Texas Futurity-G1. Three of Prairie War’s other offspring are stakes-placed.
TRS Dashin Rona (Hot Shot Dash-Pure Ol Class) nosed out Iris Cartelsbadnews for second place. Vernon Hammes owns TRS Dashin Rona, an 11-year-old gelding saddled by Ronald Sayre and rid- den by Tanner Riggs. Iris Cartelsbadnews (Agouti- Another Hot Idea), the pre-race favorite, is owned by Warren Garrels and trained by Amy Wessels. Derek Bell was aboard.
TRS A Classy Dash (Hot Shot Dash-Pure Ol Class), Fishers Wish (Fishers Dash-Kiptys Wish), Jess Choo And Me (Jess Louisiana Blue-Ms Choo Choo) and Sweet An Sour Uno (Sweet First Down- Brandi Whiz) completed the field.
Expo Square Stakes
HES A REAL STONE
by John Moorehouse
Failing to reach the winner’s circle in his first six outs of the 2012 campaign, Hes A Real Stone snapped his victory drought in a big way by going
wire-to-wire in the $22,500 Expo Square Stakes held July 21 at Fair Meadows.
The Deere Connection’s 4-year-old gelding stayed in front the entire 870-yard competition, lead- ing by daylight most of the way. Street Meter made a huge rally in the race to try to snatch the victory, but Hes A Real Stone beat his surging rival to the wire by a half-length margin.
Prepped by trainer Matt Whitekiller, Hes A
Real Stone completed the event in :46.008, for an
89 speed index. Jockey Agustin Silva was aboard. A 10-1 longshot, Hes A Real Stone produced a $13,088 payday for his owners that increased his total earn- ings to $65,868.
Prior to the Expo Square, Hes A Real Stone’s most recent victory came in his final out of 2011,
a 350-yard allowance at Will Rogers Downs. This marked the fourth win in 23 outs for Hes A Real Stone, and his first in stakes company. The gelding is the only offspring of his dam, Show Candash. Jimmy Kirkes owns Show Candash and bred the mare and also Hes A Real Stone.
Street Meter (City Street TB-Meters Off) finished second by a neck for owner Larry Wade. The Joe Neff trainee had Kenny Muntz in the irons. Chase This Chic out-nodded Ice On The Lake to claim third place. Dean Spears owns and trains Chase This Chic (Country Chicks Man-Boppem Easy), and jockey Tony Bennett rode the gelding.
The remaining order of finish was Ice On The Lake (Granite Lake-Carny Girl), Carny Streakin Dash (Streak And Dash-Carny Girl), SCJ Arabella Maria (Spit Curl Jess-Donnatella Maria TB), Featured High (Feature Mr Jess-Sixty N High) and Luna (Sawgrass TB-Bud Quality).
National Appaloosa Stakes
APPOCALYPTO
by Tracy Gantz
Appocalypto descends from two generations of champion Appaloosa mares. The colt began his own run at a championship when he defeated nine others in the July 21 National Appaloosa Stakes for 2-year-olds at Fair Meadows.
Sent off the narrow favorite over Cobra Cash, Appocalypto broke on top from post nine in the 330- yard race. He and Cobra Cash dueled for the lead, though Appocalypto never let Cobra Cash by him. With Tony Bennett in the irons, Appocalypto edged Cobra Cash by a neck in :16.895.
Dee Keener trains Appocalypto for owner- breeder Christopher Brandon. The colt had finished second in a trial at Remington Park, elevated to first upon a disqualification, and he ran third in another trial at Fair Meadows earlier this season.
Bred in Oklahoma, Appocalypto is out of 2004 ApHC Champion 2-Year-Old Sprint Filly Miss Fancy Layne, who won two of 11 races for earnings of $18,758. Appocalypto is Miss Fancy Layne’s only starter. The second dam, Miss Fast Layne, was the 1990 Champion 2-Year-Old Sprint Filly.
Juan Vazquez rode Cobra Cash (Dean Miracle- Joyball) for trainer Luis Villafranco and owner Gary Vaughan. The gelding, a half-brother to Appaloosa champion Captain Bucko, was coming off a victory in a maiden race at Fair Meadows on July 1.
Villafranco also trains third-placed Panda Doll (Real Visions-Eyesa Knockout), who was ridden by Paul Nieto. Racin RNs campaign Panda Doll, who finished second in a maiden race in her previous start.
