HRND Quarter Horse Derby
FEATURE DREAMGIRL
by Stacy Pigott
Feature Dreamgirl has blossomed as a 3-year-old, breaking her maiden earlier this year before working her way up the ladder from stakes-placed to
stakes winner in the $15,500 HRND Quarter Horse Derby on July 22 at the North Dakota Horse Park.
Owned by David Wisdom, Feature Dreamgirl broke her maiden at Remington Park before moving to Canterbury Park, where she was second in the Minnesota Stallion Breeders’/NCQHRA Derby. She finished that meet with a fourth-place effort in the Canterbury Park Derby.
Moving to the barn of trainer Robert Johnson
in North Dakota, Feature Dreamgirl entered the HRND Derby as the betting favorite. With Anselmo Padilla in the saddle, the filly loaded into post posi- tion five in the short seven-horse field. After trailing early leader Cosmic Shindig out of the gates, Feature Dreamgirl took the lead in mid-stretch and crossed the finish line a neck in front. She covered the 400 yards in :20.800.
Feature Dreamgirl has now won two of 12 starts with $27,737 in earnings. Bred by Lance Robinson, Feature Dreamgirl is a half-sister to Champion American Runaway. They are the only two stakes winners so far for their dam, Allamericandreamgirl.
In second was Cosmic Shindig (Sweet First Down-Ze Special), owned by Ketchemonia-Cote Stables. Francisco Estrada rode the gelding for trainer Reynold Cote.
Jack Jessee (Jesses Sixes-Lotta Drift) finished third for owner Tom Maher. Ernest Fennell trains the gelding, who was ridden by Richard Vasquez.
Jess The Rightway (Get Down Perry-Miss Lucky Joy) finished fourth in the HRND Derby, followed by Ride Lonesome (Shazoom-Blushing Lady Bug), Corona Cadillac (Coronas Velvet-My Saint Celine), and Aces Chiseledinstone (SC Chiseled In Stone- Aces Beduino).
Rainbow Juvenile
SOLID ANITA JO
by Stacy Pigott
Solid Anita Jo has contested the trials for three different futurities this year, each time finding her way into the corresponding juvenile race rather than the stakes final. This time, she made it work to her favor, winning the $20,000 Rainbow Juvenile on July 22 at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico.
Owned by Tammy Johnson and Jack Manning, Solid Anita Jo started her career with a second-place finish in a trial to the West Texas Futurity-G1. She returned to run seventh in the West Texas Juvenile before moving to Ruidoso Downs and the barn of trainer Mike Wakefield. There, she added two third- place finishes to her record in the Ruidoso Futurity trials and Ruidoso Juvenile.
After a second-place finish in a Rainbow Futurity trial, Solid Anita Jo loaded into post position two for the Rainbow Juvenile. Ridden by Jose Alvarez, Solid Anita Jo broke on the lead and opened a one-length advantage mid-stretch before holding off Blazin Rich to win the Juvenile by a neck in :20.113.
The win was the first for Solid Anita Jo, who has now finished in the top three in five of seven starts with earnings of $19,096. Solid Anita Jo is the first stakes winner for both her sire, freshman sire Rock Solid Jess, and her dam, stakes winner Arriba Reba.
Felipe Garcia-Luna rode Blazin Rich (Chicks A Blazin-She B Rich) for trainer Alex Sanchez. J and M Racing and Farm own the gelding.
Randy and Sandy Coleman’s Run With The Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Runaway Romance) was third with Ricky Ramirez in the saddle for Blane Wood.
The remaining order of finish was Jess A Valentine (Feature Mr Jess-I Aint Jo Chick), Dont Tell Lila (Teller Cartel-Jessthisgirl), Secret Cartel (Carters Cartel-Down With Secrets), PYC First Prize Dash (PYC Paint Your Wagon-First Prize Dash), and Lethal Fortune (Volcom-Lethal Delight). Hes Might Exclusive and Sudden Thoughts were scratched.
Don Boyd Mem. Challenge S.
SPEED SMITH
By John Moorehouse
Speed Smith showed he was aptly named on July 22 at Mt. Pleasant Meadows. Cesar Rosales’ 4-year-old gelding clocked a career-best 108 speed index while winning the $16,020 Don Boyd Memorial Challenge Stakes by daylight.
It marked Speed Smith’s first win of the 2012 season and fifth in 18 career outs. Two of those five victories have come in stakes company; Speed Smith also won last year’s QHRA of Indiana SSA Derby.
In the Don Boyd, Speed Smith started from the No. 6 gate in the seven-horse field, and made a sharp break to grab the early lead. He remained in front for the entirety of the 350 yards. The Rolando Almanza trainee, who was sent postward at odds of 11-1, crossed the wire a length in front of Zoom N Crash.
Jockey Oscar Delgado was aboard as Speed Smith finished in :17.503. Not too shabby, consider- ing Speed Smith was making his first start in more than five months. His most recent out prior to this was a Feb. 12 race at Hialeah Park.
Rosales banked a $7,121 payday that improved Speed Smith’s career bankroll to $76,551.
Sylvia Shaw Pitman bred Speed Smith, one of three stakes winners out of his dam, Speedy Empress. Pitman also owns Speedy Empress, a 1994 mare who is stakes-placed with a 7-3-3 record in 16 outs.
Zoom N Crash (Azoom-Crashin Bac) fin-
ished second for owner Mike Malik and trainer David Gates. Lee Gates was aboard. Fearles Fred (Fredricksburg-Precious Debutante) took third. The gelding is owned by Walter Harrison and trained by Carol Rettele. Richard Rettele was in the irons.
The remaining order of finish was Pescado Fuerte (Fishers Dash-Tuff Chiclet), Tough To Get Six (Tres Seis-Tuff Ladys), Eye Walk (Walk Thru Fire-Eye Betta Kim) and Jimmy James 123 (Ivory James-Fanci Ending 123). Feature Mr Bentley and Ward Ed were scratched.
