GAME OWN
By Michael Compton
In his initial try in stakes company, Game Own deliv- ered a sparkling performance in crushing seven rivals in the Sailfish Stakes at Hialeah Park on Feb. 28.
The 5-year-old gelding had demonstrated an affinity for the Hialeah Park strip and was sent to post as the second wagering choice in the 1,000-yard fixture, which was the final leg of the Hialeah Park Distance Challenge.
Ridden by Luis Guerrero, Game Own raced
in fourth early, but rode a rail bid into contention. He grabbed the lead from early pacesetter and race favorite Eyesa Shoofly Dandy and rolled through the lane to register a commanding 5 3/4-length win. He stopped the clock in :53.134, good for a speed index of 92 for trainer Yoani Abreu.
The $26,040 winner’s share of the purse increased Game Own’s earnings to $73,092. It was the fifth win from 26 lifetime starts for the veteran campaigner who is owned by Yaima Grillo.
Bred in Louisiana by Kenneth Fletcher, Game Own is out of the 2-time winner My Own Fortune, who is the dam of nine winners from 10 starters including graded stakes winner Tres Fortunes and Grade 1 stakes-placed Patriot Fortune.
Reds Casino (Bettin the Red-Thislillightofmine), the longest shot on the board at 30-1, finished second under Alex Gonalez. The 9-year-old gelding is owned by Strickland Farm Inc. and is trained by Marcus Strickland.
HTR Stables LLC’s Sheila Tequila (Tinys First Corona-Nelsons Martini TB) and jockey Omar Reyes crossed the finish in third for trainer Kalah Welch.
Eyesa Shoofly Dandy (Gold Medal Jess-Miss Sound Viking), Eye Can Beatum (Beat the Feet TB-Arbeka Supreme), JMF Shazoomer (Shazoom- Jess Bingo Beth), Splishsplash (Splash Bac-Wave Rider) & KJR Tocaille (Mr Jess Perry-Can U Dance) followed.
Championship Bonus Challenge
WRAP YOU UP
by John Moorehouse
Wrap You Up claimed her second career stakes victory in the $24,500 Portland Meadows Championship Bonus Challenge on Feb. 8.
Wrap You Up broke well from the fourth post position, opening a 1-length advantage by the time she reached the first call and never relin- quishing the lead after that.
Wrap You Up held off Lebron 6 by a head as they entered the stretch, then widened the gap late to win by a 1/2-length margin.
Hector Magallanes trains Wrap You Up, who completed the 440 yards in :21.873, registering a new career high speed index of 104. The clocking was just ticks of the :21.800 track record set by Ima Reb Hot in 1994. Jake Samuels drew the riding assignment aboard Wrap You Up for the Bonus Challenge.
Owned by Cedar Creek Tree Farm Ranch and Racing, Wrap You Up is a four-year-old sorrel filly who now holds six wins in 13 lifetime starts, and has a career bankroll of $61,633 with the addition of this $12,250 winner’s share of the purse.
Wrap You Up scored her first stakes victory in last year’s Evergreen Park Derby Challenge at Grand Prairie. This victory marked her fifth trip to the winner’s circle in a span of the past seven starts. She also was a finalist in the 2014 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 and the 2015 AQHA Derby Challenge Championship-G3.
Steve Burns, DVM, bred Wrap You Up out of the 2001 multiple stakes-placed mare Babe On The Fly that Burns also owns. An earner of nearly $250,000, Babe On The Fly is the dam of 16 win- ners and 19 ROM from 22 starters. Wrap You Up is one of six stakes winners out of his dam and is a 1/2-brother to Superior Race Horse/5-time stakes winner Rock You ($788,565), as well as 2015 Golden State Million Futurity-G1 winner Little Talks ($461,869). Babe On The Fly has over $2 million in progeny earnings.
Lebron 6 (Jess Zoomin-JN Sonoma Rose) broke well to finish second for owner/trainer Juan Sanguino. Ruben Camacho did the riding. Sneakin TR (TR Dasher-Sneak Bac) finished third under jockey Jose Guerrero. His connections include owner Gary Chumbley and trainer Scott Raley. Followed by CM Got Overserved (Corona For Me-Mi Fames A Dandy), Thinkin Of Girls (Carters Cartel-One Fast Trick), My Best Bunny (Best Advice-Royal Time Bunny), Chicks R Gone (Chickie Cherry Cola-Oso Gone) & Lil Touch Of Dixie (Sixthirteen TB-Lover Cat).
