RG GOLDEN KING
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
It was Sound Of Candy that won the Inaugural Classic on Jan. 24, winning the first test of the 2016 season with dominance.
Now two weeks later, RG Golden King over- whelmingly beat his nine rivals without being pressured or preferred in the odds, in the Dia Del Charro National Championship with a distance of 350 yards and a purse of 349,500 pesos (US $19,215 approximately).
This race is a Classic open to three year olds. Grey Wolf ZR was the only Mexican bred, while the others originated in the United States. Several of them shared a track in 2015, including Skye Fall and RG Golden King, with 7 starts each, who had the largest number of participations; Saz Saz Zoo, with the highest amount of winnings, mainly from being crowned in The Prize Classic; SE Stoli Mountain, the only maiden; BP Apollitical Policy, with a stunning speed index of 107, having obtained his second start in May 2015 when he established a track record time for 300 yards. This was a group where there was a little of everything.
The first to take the gate was the sorrel RG Golden King, preparing to run with a halter; and so each one successively loaded
the gate to completion. The gates broke open and the petite Saz Saz Zoo (#1) took over the group. RG Golden King apparently struggled to free the tie that held him to gate 4, which opened slowly. The horse then turned towards the left side and made contact with Grey Wolf ZR (#3). In such circumstances, his rider, Mario Alberto Lopez, corrected his trajectory by changing the whip’s hand three times to put him in the right direction. On the right side of the track, JA Midnight Express (#9) pulled inward and blocked Warm Evening (#8) and rider.
The race continued. From 200 yards onwards, the sorrel RG Golden King began to be noted. Already settled on the track, he confirmed his ability to control the distance. In the final 50 yards, his closure was devastat- ing, finishing 1 1/2-lengths ahead of Saz Saz Zoo, while third place was a tie between JA Midnight Express and Eye On Winning.
The race time was 17.26 seconds for a speed index of 97. The sorrel was led to the winner’s circle by still mounted Mario Alberto Lopez, guided by the hands of Jose, Rodrigo and Hernán Misael Romo Anaya, responsible for his daily management in Rancho Las Gaviotas, accompanied by Alfredo Joshua Rabanal
Cardenas. They were received by trainer Luis Aldo Flores Muñoz, family and followers of the Cuadra for the corresponding photos.
This is the second victory for RG Golden King (known as “El Gabo”), the first being in the Jodys Glory Classic on July 5, 2015. He also holds two seconds and 4 third
places in 8 performances.
Always in the money, the

The reward for his efforts was 209,700 pesos (approxi- mately US $11,529), now totaling 587,397 pesos (US $35,067 approximately).
Saz Saz Zoo (Carters
Cartel - Zentropa), occupant of second place and assisted by Israel Dominguez, is owned by Rancho Amecameca and under the training of Fidel Rosado Guevara. In 2015, he won The Prize Classic.
Third was a tie between: JA Midnight Express (Gol - Teki Ce Tan) for de la Cuadra Zamarrero, ridden by Martin Hernandez Bautista; and Eye On Winning (First Down Dash - Eye Of An Episode), guided by Eddi Cuellar for Cuadra Armadillo. Trainers responsible are Erik Zenteno Gonzalez and Erick Jose Ocampo, respectively.
From fourth to last finished in the follow- ing order: BP Apollitical Policy (Apollitical
Jess – CC Policy), Grey Wolf ZR (Separatist
- Saraccuda), Skye Fall (First Moonflash – Bac Up The Bus Sissy), Warm Evening (Walk Thru Fire – Moonlight Corona), Chuck Barie (Good Reason SA – Scraw Barie Shake) and SE Stoli Mountain (Stoli – Chinati Mountain).
