efforts in the All American Derby-G1 and
Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1 and earned $541,896 in his career. The stallion, who is a half-brother to Good Reason SA, was a top- five freshman sire in 2014. Queen Of Appeals is also the granddam of Jake Gold BR si 94 ($206,881), a Brazilian-bred runner who was the AQHA South American Champion in 2014. He shipped to the United States late in 2014 and went on to win the Bank of America California Challenge in 2015.
Following Samaja’s 2012 death, his family dispersed their breeding program during a May 2014 sale in Brazil. Queen Of Appeals had been sold privately prior to that, with an AQHA transfer recorded on Dec. 1, 2013, to Brazilian Paulo Otavio Freire Macedo.
“It was the most difficult decision we had to make as a family after my father left us,” Samaja’s son Alberto Samaja told Stallionesearch. “His horses were his passion, and he had a great love and respect for them.”
Undoubtedly, he would have been extra proud of Good Reason SA’s stallion debut as the No. 1 freshman sire of money earners in 2015.
2016 Freshman Sires
The list of stallions who will see their first crops race in 2016 is deep with talent, including two racing Champions. Feature Mr Bojangles and One Dashing Eagle are among the freshman sires horsemen will be keeping an eye on as the futurity action heats up this year.
Feature Mr Bojangles is a two-time Champion owned by R.D. Hubbard and Heysol
Howlet of Tularosa, New Mexico. Bred by Joyce Erickson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Feature Mr Bojangles earned his first title in 2011, when he was named the AQHA Champion Two-Year- Old Colt. His escapades that year included wins in the Rainbow Futurity-G1, Hobbs America Futurity-G2, and Four Corners Futurity.
The 2009 sorrel stallion returned to hit the board in four of his eight starts as a 3 year old, finishing third in the Ruidoso Derby-G1. He came back even stronger as a 4 year old, winning the $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park-G1. He was second in the
Zia Park Championship-G1 and Lovington Stakes-G2, third in the All American Gold Cup-G3, and fourth in the Refrigerator Handicap-G1. Trained by Paul Jones and
C. Dwayne “Sleepy” Gilbreath, Feature Mr Bojangles earned $270,110 during the year and picked up his second championship title as the 2013 Champion Aged Stallion.
Feature Mr Bojangles comes from a family of Champions. His dam, Catch This Dash, is
a half-sister to Champions Jumping Tac Flash and Splash Bac. Jumping Tac Flash is the dam of Champion Carters Cartel.
One Dashing Eagle raced for just one year, but that’s all it took for the sorrel stallion to take home three year-end titles
as the AQHA World Champion, Champion Two Year Old and Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. One Dashing Eagle set a single-season earnings record of $2,079,065 by winning six of seven starts in 2012, with the only blemish on his record coming in his very first start. For owners Jorge Carmona and brothers Jose and Gustavo de la Torre, One Dashing Eagle
won three seven-figure races en route to his history-making year: the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1, the All American Futurity-G1, and the Golden State Million Futurity-G1.
One Dashing Eagle helped his sire, One Famous Eagle, become the No. 1 freshman sire in 2012, breaking First Down Dash’s first-crop sire earnings record. That record still stands at $2,976,549, with One Famous Eagle’s most famous son hoping to break it. He has a powerful female family behind him through his dam, One Sweet Dash, who has also produced One Sweet Jess si 104 ($953,592, Ntr) and Hes A Standout si 101 ($45,402). One Sweet Dash is a half-sister to A Dash Of Beduino si 101 ($103,934), This Jet Is Royal si 107 ($91,613), Posting The Colors si 106 ($36,776), and several other stakes horses.
A couple of other freshman sires
have championship bloodlines as well. Flyingwitheagles is a full brother to Champion Heartswideopen, while Harems Last Dash is a full brother to Champion Royal Quick Dash. One Famous Brioni is a full brother to the aforementioned One Famous Eagle and Freakier is a half-brother to World Champion Freaky.
As breeders of racing Quarter Horses continue to seek the next outstanding Thoroughbred outcross, all eyes will be on
a handful of Thoroughbreds who will be represented by their first Quarter Horse runners this year. The Thoroughbred freshman sires include, stakes winner Indian Council TB and Stellar Rain TB. The latter is a son of Storm Cat out of a half-sister to Devon Lane, a pedigree which has had a modicum of success in the Quarter Horse ranks already.
