PHQ GOODBYE EARL
by Michael Cusortelli
Sent to post at odds of 7-1, second-fastest qualifier PHQ Goodbye Earl responded with a clear 1 1/4-length victory in the 350-yard PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity-G1 at Remington Park on April 30. Jesus Salazar rode PHQ Goodbye Earl, sorrel gelding who stopped the timer in :17.615 and posted a career-best 86 speed index. Dee Keener, who qualified six of the 10
finalists, trained the PHQ Goodbye Earl for the Coweta, Oklahoma-based Paint Horse Queens partnership consisting of Wendy Ingersol Keener - the wife of PHQ Goodbye Earl’s trainer - and Traci Wright.
PHQ Goodbye Earl earned his first win in four outs despite drifting in
from his outside post. The $39,596 winner’s share of the $104,200 purse pushed his bankroll to $46,804.
“I liked it (the outside post) because you don’t have to worry about much trouble,” said Salazar. “But the last time he was in the outside post, he got left. Today, he left there running, and after the good break, I knew we had a really good shot.”
PHQ Goodbye Earl was also a final- ist in the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa
Futurity-G1 at Remington Park on March 26.
PHQ Goodbye Earl is
out of Sayonara. Racing in Oklahoma and Texas from 2009-11, Sayonara earned $96,058 from 21 starts, and her four wins included a vic- tory in the 2010 Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Derby-RG1 at Fair Meadows. PHQ Goodbye Earl repre- sents Sayonara’s first starter.
Also trained by Keener, DTL Fast Flyin Tex (Texas
Six-Flyin Candy QH) was second under Randy Wilson for owners Mark and Lori Dolan.
Another Keener trainee, DTL Batter Up (Royal Quick Flash-Beef Jerkin Queen), a trial winner and third-fastest qualifier, finished third to complete a $295 ($1) trifecta. DTL Batter Up was ridden by Jose Vega for owner Elizabeth Logan.
Keener trained the first, second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh finishers of this race. Followed by Fade Shot (Fade To Fame-
Valdarama), Snooki (SF Royal Quick Flash- Corona Lace), fastest qualifier and 6-5 favorite DTL Josie Wales (Judys Lineage-Josie Cartel), Rut Row (SF Royal Quick Flash-Shawne Chick), Truck Yeah (SF Royal Quick Flash-Crazy Mother Trucker), and Dashin Secret (Dashin Country Quick-Sheza Royal Secret). Ninth- fastest qualifier A Regal Streak scratched.

IM BEAU BROWN
by Tracy Gantz
Sporting odds of 29-1, Im Beau Brown surprised the field in the Bank of America Remington Championship Challenge-G2 on May 22. He was the 10th-fastest qualifier from his April 30 trial, leading into his boxcar price. “The horse ran the race of his life,” said Julio Corral, who trains Im Beau Brown for owner Desiderio Nava.
The day of the final, Corral had also qualified some horses in
Colorado, where he is based,
and so he was unable to go to Remingto Park.
“The day before his trial, we hauled him 11 hours down to Remington,” said Corral. “He ran sixth and qualified.”
In the final, Im Beau Brown broke sixth under jockey Juan Pulido, but
he moved up quickly. Challenged on either side, Im Beau Brown dug in and

surged to the front. Even with other rivals closing from the outside, he held everyone off to win by a nose in :22.046 for the 440 yards.
Corral was particularly proud of Im Beau Brown because he has outrun his purchase prices. Initially, Omar Hernandez bought him for $3,700 at the 2012 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale. After the gelding had com-
peted for a couple of seasons, Corral’s father, Modesto Reyes, bought him
privately for $5,000. Larry Kist bred Im
Beau Brown in Missouri from stakes-placed Special Smoothie. The mare has produced three winners from four starters. She is also a 100% ROM producer. Prior to the Remington race, Im Beau Brown’s best finishes had been a second and a third in the Rocky Mountain Championship.
Rockin Disco (Rock Solid Jess-Check This Disco), who won this race last year, finished second with Ivan Carnero aboard. Tammy Johnson trains the 6-year-old gelding for Rockin J Running Horses and Jack Manning.
I Bleed Red (Red Storm Cat-Secret In Stone) ran third for jockey Mario Delgado, trainer Luis Villafranco, and owner Twisted
S Ranch. Though a maiden in 22 starts, the 5-year-old gelding had earlier placed in stakes.
Completing the field were Exquisite
Stride (Carters Cartel-Tinys Lil Jess), A Royal Country Man (Country Chicks Man-A Royal Goddess), Admiral Zoomwalt (Shazoom-Tellin It All), Valiant Approach (Valiant Hero- Panther Not A Kitty), Jess Rockn (Dejon-Nn Rock N Effort), and Savanna Slim (One Famous Eagle-Gonesideofleaving). JP In Hot Pursuit was scratched.
