2015 “Speedlines.” Snap was sired by Snip by Flying Childers by Darley Arabian. The dam of Snip was Sister To Soreheels by Basio. Basio was out of the mare Bay Peg. The dam of Snip is Sister To Slip who was sired by Fox. Fox was out of Bay Peg. Thus his pedigree serves as an example of “returning the best blood of the sire’s dam.”
This takes us to Whalebone, Web and Whisker the famous full brothers and sister that have influenced the pedigree of our modern racehorses. The sire of these three
is Waxy by Pot8o’s by Eclipse. This is the Eclipse that goes back to the Darley Arabian. The dam of Waxy was Maria by Herod. The dam of Maria was Lisette by Snap giving him a Herod/Snap cross.
The dam of these three was Penelope by Trumpator. Penelope was out of Prunella by Highflyer by Herod. The dam of Prunella was Promise by Snap. This gives us returning the best blood of the sire’s dam to the foal through the nick of Herod and Snap. (An added note: We do find one more cross to Snap in this pedigree, and that is through Trumpator the sire of Penelope. Trumpator is sired by Conductor who was out of a daughter of Snap.)
A horse that was known as Little Janus after he was imported to the American Colonies in 1759 became the foundation
sire of the Celebrated American Quarter Running Horse. This is the name given to the original Quarter Horses. The Celebrated American Quarter Running Horse was noted for its ability to run short distances, thus the beginning of modern Quarter Horse racing.
Little Janus was sired by the original Janus who was a son of the Godolphin Arabian. The dam of Janus was Amorett by Bartlett’s Childers by the Darley Arabian. The dam
of Amorett was Flying Whigg. The dam of Flying Whigg was Points. Points was sired by St Victor’s Barb and out of Grey Whynot by Whynot. The original Janus was a full brother to Blank from the Herod/Snap/Blank cross.
The dam of Little Janus was a mare known as the Fox Mare by Fox. The dam
of the Fox Mare was a mare sired by Bald Galloway. Bald Galloway was sired by St Victor’s Barb and out of Grey Whynot by Whynot. Bald Galloway and Points were full brother and sister. Thus they returned the best blood of the sire’s dam back to Janus to get Little Janus.
Here is another returning the best blood of the sire’s dam with Little Janus. The sire of Amorette was Bartlet’s Childers by Darley Arabian. The dam of Bartlet’s Childers
was Betty Leedes by Old Careless and out
of Cream Checks. Old Careless was sired
by Spanker. Spanker was out of the Old Morocco Mare, who was a daughter of Old Bald Peg.
The sire of Cream Cheeks was Leedes Arabian. Her dam was a Spanker Mare by Spanker who was out of the Old Morocco Mare who was out of Old Bald Peg. The dam of the Spanker mare was the Old Morocco Mare who was out of Old Bald Peg. Some pedigree pundits believe that the Spanker Mare that was the dam of Cream Cheeks
was actually sired by a son of Spanker known as Young Spanker. No matter the pedigree we have line breeding to Old Bald Peg
and Leedes Arabian as another example of returning the best blood of the sire’s dam in the pedigree of Little Janus.
Here are some more interesting crosses that have affected the American Quarter Horse that carry the return the blood pedigree design. Hickory Bill and Harmon Baker were two of the famous sons of the foundation sire Peter McCue. Harmon Baker was an important sire for William Anson. Anson was an English Aristocrat who was responsible for raising awareness of the early Quarter Horses. Hickory Bill was brought to Texas by George Clegg. He bought him from the estate of his breeder Samuel Watkins the breeder of Peter McCue.
Peter McCue was sired by Dan Tucker. The dam of Peter McCue was Nora M a Thoroughbred mare by Voltigeur. The dam of Nora M was Kitty Clyde by Star Davis by Glencoe.
The dam of Harmon Baker was Nona P by Duke Of Highlands. The dam of Nona
P was Mollie D by Tennyson. The dam of Mollie D was Nora M the dam of Peter McCue. Thus we see returning the best blood of the sire’s dam in the pedigree of Harmon Baker through line breeding to Kitty Clyde.
Hickory Bill was out of Lucretia M by The Hero. Lucretia M was out of Bird by Jack Traveler. The dam of Bird was Kitty Clyde the dam of Nora M. Thus we see returning the best blood of the sire’s dam through Kitty Clyde in the pedigree of Hickory Bill.
When you look at the history of the American Quarter Horse you will find the name George Clegg and not far behind
his name you will find Ott Adams. Adams would buy the stallion Little Joe from Clegg and from that purchase he would breed many top Quarter Horses. This list of good horses included Zantanon. Zantanon was heavily raced and became known as the Mexican Man O’War for his success south of the border. Zantanon is best known as the sire of King P-234.
Eclipse, the sire of Alarm, who is the sire of Himyar and the grandsire of Domino, goes back to the Darley Arabian
Zantanon was sired by Little Joe who was sired by Traveler. The pedigree of Traveler has been listed as unknown and today it is considered as unknown. I have found one theory that says that he was sired by Jack Traveler a son or grandson of Steel Dust. Steel Dust being another foundation sire of the American Quarter Horse. Jack Traveler is found in the pedigree of Peter McCue’s sire Dan Tucker.
The dam of Little Joe was Jenny by Sykes Rondo. Sykes Rondo was sired by McCoy Billy by Old Billy. The dam of Sykes Rondo was Grasshopper by Martin’s Cold Deck
by Old Billy. The dam of Jenny was May Mangum by Anthony by Old Billy.
The dam of Zantanon was Jeanette by Billy by Big Jim by Sykes Rondo. The dam of Jeanette was a mare by Sykes Rondo. Thus we see returning the best blood of the sire’s dam to the sire with the blood of Old Billy found in horses like Sykes Rondo and May Mangum.
One of the great sires in the Southwest was Chicaro Bill. He was sired by Chicaro and out of Verna Grace by Little Joe. When they bred Chicaro Bill to a mare named Kitty Wells they got Flicka. Flicka is the foundation mare in a long line of horses that have been Champions on the track. They include Black Easter Bunny, Bunny’s Bar Maid, Be A Bono, Jet View, Elliptical, Power Train, Black Sable and Come Six.
Kitty Wells was sired by Joe Moore by Little Joe. The dam of Kitty Wells was Lady Lou by Little Joe. Thus Flicka is the cross of returning the best blood of the sire’s dam to
