were passed by the board. Three proposals— RG-020, RG-070-1 and SC-302-4—were passed with early 2017 implementation; all others will go into effect Jan. 1, 2018.
Among the most groundbreaking changes were the two registration-related rules. RG-020 requires DNA genetic testing for Paint pattern genes for cropout horses; though the results of that test do not impact the horse’s registration eli- gibility, they will be noted on the horse’s registra- tion certificate to aid owners in making breeding decisions that take into account the horse’s genetic color production capabilities or lack thereof.
RG-070-1 will allow a horse that has two APHA parents (sire and dam) but lacks a natural Paint marking that’s two inches or greater in the qualifying area (as outlined in the rulebook) to qualify for the Regular Registry if specific criteria are met.
• The horse must have an APHA-registered sire and dam
• The horse must have at least one Paint- characteristic as outlined in the rulebook— this includes a blue eye, white on the lip, or dark spots in a white face or leg marking, among others.
• The horse must have DNA genetic testing from an APHA-approved laboratory that confirms the horse carries a known Paint pattern gene: Tobiano, Frame Overo, Sabino 1, Splash White 1, 2 or 3, or Dominant White 5, 10 or 20.
Both registration rules were approved for early implementation. RG-020 goes into effect May 1. The RG-070 modification will go into effect in early April; more details about this rule are available at apha.com.

at the APHA Convention can be found here: apha.com/forms/rule-books.
Any APHA member has the power to sub- mit rule change proposals. The form is avail- able at apha.com/forms/rule-books and they’re due annually in early August.
Honoring The Past
A valued tradition of the APHA Convention is the Hall of Fame Award Ceremony, which took place on Feb. 26. Eight Hall of Fame inductees were recognized for their impact on the Paint Horse breed; several other award winners were also honored.
Sharon & David Frost for Jerry Peddycoart
Inductee Jerry Peddycoart’s daughter, Sharon Frost, said. “And when I read the APHA Mission Statement, I read it in Dad’s voice. To me, it perfectly summed up his feelings: ‘We inspire, nurture, promote and provide mean- ingful experiences to generations interested in preserving the versatile Paint Horse.’
“Dad would be pleased with the direction that you all have taken the Association. Jerry Peddycoart was always proud to be a member of the APHA and he would have been humbled with this recognition. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.”
Also honored were:
• Fred Tabor, Distinguished Service Award recipient
• Carolyn Dobbins, Paint Professional Horsewoman of the Year
• Fred Adam, Judge Emeritus
• Floyd Danley, Judge Emeritus
• Jim Jirkovsky, Judge Emeritus
• Dan Moreland, Judge Emeritus

Riding Off With New Leaders
APHA’s top leadership roles, the Executive Committee, were installed at the Convention as well.
Officers for 2017 are: • Acting President:
Dr. Craig Wood, Owenton, Kentucky
• President Elect: Mike Short, Shiner, Texas • Vice President: Casey West, Abilene, Kansas • Senior Committee Member:
Karen Thomas, Morganton,
North Carolina
• Fifth Committee Member:
Alison Umberger, Broad Run, Virginia
• Sixth Committee Member:
Dr. Travis Titlow, Lincoln, California
• Immediate Past President:
Susie Shaw, Parsons, Tennessee
New to the committee is Alison Umberger. The lifelong horsewoman from Virginia is excited to serve the APHA membership.
“There’s no doubt that we all love our beautiful Paint Horses,” Alison said. “But in the end, I believe it’s about the connections and the memories that we make along the way that fuel our passion for APHA.”
Until Next Year
With the involvement of APHA’s membership, the 2017 APHA Convention proved to be one for the books. APHA staff members will be working to implement the approved rule changes and keep general members updated on the progress of the association.
