SAM HOUSTON JUVENILE STAKES
Gary W. Hartstack’s Daddys Blushing took the measure of nine opponents when the he won the April 29, $48,360 Sam Houston Juvenile Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park.
Ridden by Francisco Calderon and racing against a reported 18-mph head wind, Daddys Blushing went 330 yards in :16.843 and earned a 93 speed index. Leon Bard prepped the bay New Mexico-bred son of Big Daddy Cartel.
Hartstack acquired Daddys Blushing for $14,000 at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The gelding was bred by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico, and he is one of two stakes winners from two crops sired by Big Daddy Cartel.
An 8-year-old son of Corona Cartel and the graded stakes winning Mr Eye Opener mare Miss Racy Eyes earned $121,800
from five outs while racing in 2011, and he was a finalist in the 440-yard All American Futurity (G1) and 400-yard Rainbow Futurity (G1), both at Ruidoso Downs. The stallion has sired the earners of more than $737,000, including A Super Sonic Boom,
the winner of last year’s New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park.
Big Daddy Cartel is a half brother to stakes winner Racy La Jolla. The stallion is owned by and stands for a $3,500 fee at MJ Farms.
Daddys Blushing is out of Sandy June Bug, an unraced homebred 16-year-old daughter of the Bugs Alive In 75 stallion Blushing Bug. The gelding is a half brother to two stakes winners: Junior June Bug, the winner of two stakes from 2012-13 including the 2013 Zia Derby (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs; and ’06 New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) winner Hedge Fund.
Daddys Blushing’s second dam, the winning homebred Dash Ta Fame mare Sandys Fame, ran second in the 1997 Diamond Classic Futurity (RG1) at
Casper, Wyoming. A ’95 foal, Sandys Fame produced graded stakes winner Sandys Jesse and the winning and stakes-placed Lagaria, the dam of 2011 Mountain Top Futurity (R) winner Sammy James.
Daddys Blushing made his debut with a three-quarter length victory in a
Sam Houston Futurity trial on April 7. The $14,508 winner’s share of the Sam Houston Juvenile purse bumped his earnings to $16,308.
Just Another Natural finished second, a neck behind Daddys Blushing. Mi Rey Cartel, Krash N Diamonds, Thecartelofmiracle, Eye B Dashing, Mystical Jess, Prison Break Pilsner, Coronarita Blue, and Raise Sweet completed the order of finish.
Just Another Natural is a homebred daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion Furyofthewind racing for T.C. Flack. The filly has won one of three outs and has banked $17,100.
A homebred brown son of The Louisiana Cartel, Mi Rey Cartel is owned by Jose L. Estrada and Paul Lozolla. The gelding has earned $11,472 from two races.
