Speedhorse Photo Archive Answer
The photo on page 199 shows Double Queen at Ruidoso Downs winning the first Rainbow Futurity on August 16, 1964. Ridden by jockey James Dreyer, the bay filly completed the 400-yard event in :20.35 for owner Clarence Scharbauer and trainer Don Farris. The stakes boasted a purse of $90,090.
Foaled in 1962, Double Queen (Double Bid-Miss Widow, Depth Charge TB) raced from 1964-1965 winning seven races from 30 career starts. She earned a career-high speed index of 95 and $45,064. Her only stakes victory was in the Rainbow Futurity.
Double Queen moved on to the job as a broodmare in 1967, and earned the title of AQHA Dam of Distinction in 2006. She produced 100% money earners from ten starters with nearly $600,000 in combined earnings, including three stakes winners – 1975 All American Derby winner Vim And Vigor, Duplicate Bid, and Twin Jet. Double Queen is also the grandam of Champion Dynago Victory.
This year’s $1,000,000 Rainbow Futurity was held at Ruidoso Downs on July 24 and was won by A Revenant.
