Bigger & Better
The 2016 AjPHA Youth World Championship Show took place June 27–July 9 in Fort Worth, Texas, and this year’s event was bigger and better than ever. Exhibitors across the United States and Canada competed for world championships, brag- ging rights, great prizes and more than $165,000 in scholarships. Entries were up 9 percent overall over 2015, and more than 150 exhibitors—including 83 first-time attendees—took home scholarship cash.
Special congratulations to Meredith Scroggs of Kelly, Louisiana, and Renos Cool Dancer— they won the Power Performance High-Point and High-Point Western Youth awards, and finished second in the All-Around Youth 14–18 race. Meredith and her 2004 blue roan tobiano mare by Vickter Too Cool QH and out of Renos Flamin Dancr competed in roping and speed events, winning three world champion- ship titles and bagging $4,050 in scholarships.

‘Joker’ stacks the Deck
Lorin Chandler of Milan, Tennessee, burst onto the scene at the 2016 All American Youth Barrel Race June 14–18 in Jackson, Mississippi, blazing her way to the 4D championship aboard Zans Kitaman and netting the dynamic duo $4,000.
“I’ve had ‘Joker’ for about three or four years now,” Lorin said. “He’s very particular about his arenas. If it’s thin dirt, he won’t run in it.”
Joker—a 2004 palomino tobiano by Zans Flying Spark and out of Callies Lucky Comet QH—approved of the dirt in Jackson, laying down electric run after run, each one faster than the last; he culminated with a 15.49 sec- ond run to win the 4D title.
“My runs were good to me because all the barrels were up, and he tried his best for me,” Lorin said. “The second go was a lot better for him because he was more acclimated to the arena.”
With the fire of a true competitor, Lorin is already looking ahead to the next rodeo.
“I’ll probably use part of my earnings to pay for my entry fees,” Lorin said. “I just want to try my best and work hard with him.”
