ZOOMIN JR
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
After her victory in the AQHA Maiden Challenge on March 6, Zoomin Jr was scheduled for the Chirina Glorys Classic for fillies and mares three years and older, being part of a group of 14 candidates competing to be in the finals. The two qualifying races were held on March 27, and the eventual winner qualified to the finals with a time of :17.39 for the fourth fastest time.
Two weeks after the trials, only nine of the 10 who passed the first stage in the trials returned to the track for the finals due to the withdrawal of Weee. This made Volcoms Heart a wide favorite as she already won this classic in 2015 and for this year’s qualified with the fastest time. An interesting fact
for this runner was the change of rider, as José Luis Santos replaced Eddi Cuellar, her regular rider.
When they took position in the gates, Volcoms Heart showed some discomfort and it was reflected in her delayed departure. The doors opened and in the first yards, Solo Una moved inward and bumped Vanylla Shake, while Beauty N Speed moved outward to
tightened up the competitors between them. Rosey Posey took the brunt of the force
as the impact unseated rider Moises Gonzalez Garcia, and the filly continued the race alone.
This incident gave oppor-
tunity to the starters who
left from the right side of the
gate, where Zoomin Jr was
running well and who in the
final yards snatched the lead
from Solo Una and managed to cross the finish line with his nose in front of Volcoms Heart, who closed extremely fast but not enough to get there first. The race time was :17.20 for a 98 speed index.
It was an creditable victory achieved by the daughter of Jess Zoomin out of Miss Rogue (by Mr Jess Perry), having dominated proven individuals. This was Zoomin Jr’s third start and second classic win. She had Alberto Ceron Zamudio in the stirrups, a rider with an ascending career in mounts both at the
Hipodromo de las Americas and other tracks. She was saddled by Liderme Rene Gomez Diaz.
The four-year-old filly was bred in the United States by Triple M Farms LLC
and runs under the name of Cuadra El Delirio, owned by Alejandro Garza.
The race had a total purse of 400,100 pesos (approxi- mately US $22,361), of which
240,060 pesos (approximately US $13,416) was paid to the account of the winner.
In the end, as a result of protests and inquiries to the stewardess, Una Sola was dis- qualified from third and placed seventh, while Beauty N Speed dropped from fifth to last.
Volcoms Heart (Volcom - Lethal Heart) took the prize for second place under the guid- ance of Jose Luis Santos for Cuadra Estanzuela and trainer Simon Martin Hernandez. She was just millimeters behind scoring her seventh classic win.
