                                Mexican Bred Derby Challenge
GAME SAMBASO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
This young clasico and corresponding futu- rity - the Mexican Bred Juvenile Challenge - is associated with a prominent Mexican breeder: Everardo Múzquiz Elguezábal, whose ranch has produced the winners of the first two editions of both races. I refer to the filly Shiney Six and gelding Game Sambaso; the latter having won on March 13, 2016, when he placed himself in the front of a group of eight contenders at a distance of 350 yards for a prize of 412,140 pesos (approximately US $22,958).
This was a race with notable absences, as only nine of the 46 that ran the Juvenile saw action in the Derby, including only two of the finalists. With so many participants, it came down to the Mexican Bred Derby Challenge where the grey Game Sambaso ratified his domination 5 months before and now sur- passed his rivals by 2-lengths in 17.42 seconds for a speed index of 92.
At the start, El Vasco Gc (#4) pulled outwards and inconvenienced Im Native Princess (#6) and Honor Cartel (#7), this being the only problem in the race. Joining them from the extreme position of gate
9, Game Sambaso began to move freely well supported by his rider Ismael Parra Martinez. The pair showcased their skills and imposed them on the group from the initial yards. El Vasco GC was the closest one, ending in second place
by a nose in front of Sea Corona Cash, who ended in third.
Game Sambaso was
presented by his current
owner and breeder in the
Subasta Selecta Yearling
Sale 2014 (Lot 315) orga-
nized by the Hipodromo
de las Americas. He is a
son of the stallion Sambaso
Dancer and out of The
Answer Lady, by Corona
Cartel. The gelding trains
in Veracruz on the premises
of Cuadra IP, being conditioned by Liderme Rene Gomez Diaz. Game Sambaso is the first clasico winner produced by The Answer Lady, who did not run and who is the dam of three winners.
Sambaso Dancer, his sire - a son of First Down Dash and out of Beduino Dancer - has had several offspring of Clasico winners in Mexico, highlighted by Corona Lady, Mango Sambaso, Eye Sambaso, Sambaso
Chic, Sambaso Jet, and more. Due to his advanced age and health problems, he is likely soon to be with- drawn from service.
The reward for this race was 192,718 pesos (approxi- mately US $10,790), making the total of 1,146,509 pesos (approximately US $69,919) in Game Sambaso’s bank account.
El Vasco GC (Native Jewel Dh - Sixarun Girl), a dapple gray bred by Gabriel Cue Sacre, took the prize for
second place for owner Estanzuela Cuadra under the direction of Eddi Cuellar. He was saddled by Simon Martin Hernandez Diaz and is a finalist of the Stallion Futurity.
Third place went to the red bay Sea Corona
