Jess Good Candy wins the All American Futurity
victories came in a stakes race, he went off as a mid-priced 10-1 shot. In addition, regular rider G.R. Carter Jr. opted for First Valiant Sign, the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 winner who had qualified the fastest on the second day of trials.
Many members of the Pevehouse family, which hails from Ratliff City, Oklahoma, showed up for the event, joining the family of trainer Clint Crawford.
“I had all three of my children there, and I had three grandchildren there—probably 20-25 people,” Rozella said.
Crawford replaced Carter with jockey Ivan Carnero. When the gate opened, Jess Good Candy broke inward slightly, bumping with First Valiant Sign. He raced in close quarters early in the 440 yards, but then began running powerfully to take the lead. One Fabulous Eagle, the overall fastest qualifier and the 2-1 favorite, closed ground from the outside, but Jess Good Candy rebuffed the challenge to win by a neck in :21.414.
“I don’t know that I have words to describe what it was like,” said Rozella. “I knew the horse was strong. He’s a big horse, and he’s tall. After he was bumped a little bit, he just came down by himself in a straight line. I couldn’t ask for it to be any better. And there were some great horses in there.”
Rozella was worried that Jess Good Candy would have trouble like he did in his All American trial.
