By Emily Paulk
The Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown awards two Champions – the Triple Crown Champion for the horse that wins all three races, and the Triple Crown Hi-Point Champion for the horse with the most points having been paid in full and entered in all three trials and having competed in two of three trials. 2022 marks the 11th running of the Speedhorse sponsored event.
The first leg, the $236,850 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, was won by the Paint colt Signs Of Livewire (CRM Livewire-Signs Of PYC QH, PYC Paint Your Wagon QH) at Remington Park on May 28. Signs Of Livewire was out of the gates on top and was never headed, scoring a wire-to-wire 2-length victory, with PFR Quickwire in second and BF Hannas Wagon in third.
The 2-year-old colt most recently won the second leg in the $74,267 Speedhorse Paint &
Appaloosa Futurity-G1 at Fair Meadows on July 23. Signs Of Livewire again led from start to finish, crossing the wire with another 2-length margin of victory, with Zbars Livewire FS in second and RP Dirty Barracuda in third.
Signs Of Livewire is owned by Jeff Adams, trained by Dee Keener and was ridden by Jesus Salazar in both races.
If Signs Of Livewire wins the third and final leg, he will become only the second horse to earn this title with the first being 3-time World Champion Painted Turnpike in 2015. His owner will be awarded with a $35,000 coupon towards the purchase of a SportChassis LLC hauler, a trophy and buckle.
This year, several horses are vying for the Triple Crown Hi-Point Champion Award. With the top earner being Signs Of Livewire with
20 points, he is followed by PFR Quickwire (CRM Livewire-Quick Caydee, Country Quick
Dash) with 15 points and RP Dirty Barracuda (Barracuda-RP Eye N Colours QH, Eye Yin
You QH) with 13 points. PFR Quickwire is owned by Painted Faith Racing, trained by Dee Keener and was ridden by James Flores (first
leg) and Andrew Samaniego (second leg). RP Dirty Barracuda is owned by Roy Kent Perkins, trained by Ray Enlow and was ridden by Roman Cruz in both legs.
The Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Hi-Point Champion award points are awarded according to finishing position in each race, and the winners will receive additional awards, including a $5,000 cash bonus.
The third and final leg of the Speedhorse Triple Crown will take place with the $50,000 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Championship Futurity-G1 at Will Rogers Downs. The trials for this race will be held on Oct. 22 and the final will take place on Nov. 12.
