Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1
ONE DASHING EAGLE

Jose and Gustavo De La Torre and Jorge Carmona, of San Gregorio Racing Stable, have teamed up on some nice horses in the past including Vessels Maturity-G1 winner Blues Man Too. Now, they have a major futurity horse in their barn thanks to One Dashing Eagle’s win in the $1,001,000 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1.
One Dashing Eagle has been nothing short of spectacular for his connections since they purchased him for $41,000 at the 2011 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The One Famous Eagle colt debuted with a promising second-place finish in a maiden race on April 29. His second start was in the Ed Burke Million Futurity tri- als, where he won by three-quarters of a length to set the top qualifying time of :17.555.
“We just took it slow with him and kept him fresh,” Jorge Carmona said of One Dashing Eagle, who went to the track only twice between the trials and finals of the Ed Burke.
The tactic worked, as One Dashing Eagle ran an even more impressive race in the June 24 finals. With regular rider Adrian Loza in the saddle, One Dashing Eagle broke on the lead from post position eight. He quickly cleared
the field, and despite lugging in badly to the center of the track, continued to open up a 1 1/4-length lead that he held to the wire. The 3-2 favorite covered the 350 yards in :17.337.
“When I started working with One Dashing Eagle, he felt like a different type of a horse. He was pure power. It’s amazing to think that my dream of winning this type of
a race has finally happened,” said 25-year-old Loza, who credits jockey Saul Ramirez and horseman Horacio Rios with teaching him the finer points of race riding.
One Dashing Eagle’s win was worth $420,420 for the De La Torres and Carmona, more than 10 times his purchase price. He was targeted at the sale because he is a half-brother to One Sweet Jess, which the

“You can’t go wrong when you buy a horse out of One Sweet Dash. She’s a full sister to the great Walk Thru Fire and that’s all we needed
to know when we first started looking at her babies. She’s a great producer and we’ve loved racing her sons,” said Jose De La Torre. “We were crushed when we heard that Jerry Allred had passed away a few months ago. They are all gone now, but we think about the Allred Brothers a lot because of the horses. We’ve been blessed to have been able to own some
nice horses from their great breeding operation.”
One Sweet Jess stood
his first season at stud in 2012 at Burns Ranch in Menifee, California. One Dashing Eagle is still a colt and could have a stallion career to look forward to in the future as well, but not until he tackles a few more of the sport’s biggest races. Unfortunately, he is not eligible for the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1, meaning he won’t get a shot
at the Los Alamitos Bonanza bonus money. But he could get a shot at another of the sport’s most prestigious events—the All American Futurity-G1. De La Torre indicated the colt could ship to Ruidoso Downs for the sum- mer before returning to Los Alamitos for the Golden State Million Futurity-G1 this fall.
“This is the biggest race we’ve been in, and we’re just thrilled to be here,” said Carmona, who is a heavy equipment operator and also
