Ed Burke Juvenile
REMEMBERING SPENCE
by Stacy Pigott
Remembering Spence’s first two starts were troubled ones, though he still managed to break his maiden and then finish third in a trial to the
Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1. In his third race, the Ed Burke Juvenile on June 24 at Los Alamitos, Remembering Spence had the benefit of a relatively clean trip, parlaying that into a half-length victory.
Ridden by Francisco Rubio, Remembering Spence broke well in the Ed Burke Juvenile and dueled with Beat This Chick, Gold Flames On Fire and Engraver for the first half of the 350-yard race. Under a hand ride by Rubio, Remembering Spence pulled away late to cross the wire first in :17.476. The favorite earned $16,500 and returned $5.80 to win.
Juan Aleman saddled Remembering Spence, who was purchased for $16,000 at the 2011 Los Alamitos Equine Sale by Pedro Daniel Cervantes. Francisco Guzman now owns the TR Dasher colt. Ed Allred bred Remembering Spence, who is named after longtime breeder Spencer Childers. Remembering Spence’s female family traces to Childers’ foundation mare, Champion Black Sable. His dam, Sables Bono, is an unraced daughter of multiple Grade 1 stakes winner Sables Secret. Sables Bono is a 100% ROM and winner producer.
Francisco Vallejo owns and trains runner-up Beat This Chick (Tres Seis-Beduinos Rusty). Eduardo Nicasio rode the filly, who started twice at Remington Park before breaking her maiden at Los Alamitos in May.
Finishing third under jockey Cruz Mendez was Gold Flames On Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Gold Cult). Guillermo Morales trains the gelding for Mike Abraham.
The top three were followed by Engraver (Wave Carver-Dalark), Stel Redneck (Stel Corona-Redneck Girl), Jolly First Toll SA (Tres Seis-First Down Toll), Zesty (TR Dasher-Pie Maid), Jewel First Cat SA (First Down Dash-Gottabes Cat), Jam Rose Bound SA (Snowbound-TB-Gather The Roses), and Saving Shirley (Hawkinson-Shirleys Strawfly).
runs a small training and lay-up facility in Riverside, California. “The De La Torres do a great job, and we are thankful that we are able to enjoy this with them. Hopefully we can keep it going, as we have Flaming Out and Reina Del Fuego in the Vessels Maturity on July 8.”
Finishing second in the Ed Burke Million was Fires Blazin (Walk Thru Fire-Thats A Blazin Chick). Cruz Mendez rode the geld-
ing for trainer Guillermo Morales and owner Arnold Gonzalez. Fires Blazin also finished second to One Dashing Eagle in their Ed Burke trial, clocking the sixth-fastest qualifying time, after breaking his maiden on May 18.
Joy Roses Eagle SA (One Famous Eagle- Gather The Roses) finished third under jockey
One Dashing Eagle in the post parade.
Ramon Sanchez. Bred and owned by the late Gianni Samaja, Joy Roses Eagle SA has a pedi- gree very similar to that of the winner, as she is sired by One Famous Eagle and out of Gather The Roses, who is out of Beduinos Sweet Rose, out of Sweet Beduino. Joy Roses Eagle SA ran an extremely troubled seventh in her first start before finishing strongly to come in second in a maiden race in her next attempt. She won her trial with the fourth-fastest qualifying time.
The top three were followed by Watch Linda Ballet (Mr Jess Perry-Sky Chicks), Tres Especial (Tres Seis-Sporty Spice), Jess Being Valiant (Valiant Hero-Jess Sass Me), Starlight Delight (Separatist-A Delightful Legacy), High School Secrets (No Secrets Here-Summertime High), and Revv Me Up (Stel Corona-Revv It Up). Freedom Choice was scratched.
It took a ruling of the California Horse Racing Board to determine the final field for the Ed Burke, as three horses which qualified through the finals had connections that were involved with the recent federal indictments and arrests related to an alleged money launder- ing scheme by the Los Zetas drug cartel. Five different CHRB rules were cited in the rulings that denied entry to Mr Ease Cartel, Streak Hitter and Super Long Straw, while 11th quali- fier Freedom Choice and 12th qualifier Tres Especial were given starting spots. Revv Me
Up tied with Viva La Blue for the 13th fastest qualifying time, and won the shake to deter- mine the final spot in the race.
