It doesn’t get much better than qualifying three horses for a big race, all related to your own stallion. That’s what Dan and Kaye
Jones of Kemp, Texas, did in the $57,800 Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 at Lone Star Park on Oct. 27 with Live Moonshine, Wired For Sound, and Gogo Maserati, all trained by Matt Whitekiller.
“Two were by Livewire, and one was Livewire’s half-sister,” said Kaye Jones.
“Livewire” is the Paint stallion CRM Livewire, bred by Dan and raced by Dan
and Kaye. The horse is a two-time World Champion Paint with six other Paint Championship titles to his credit. The 2009 stallion won four stakes events during his rac- ing career, including the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Derby-G1 at Fair Meadows in 2012.
The Joneses stand CRM Livewire at James Ranch in Wayne, Oklahoma, and he currently leads all Paint stallions by earnings this year with more than $400,000 ahead of the num- ber two leading sire of Paint runners as of press time. CRM Livewire is also on the all-time leading list of sires of Paint money earners,
and is the sire of three 2017 Paint Champions including World Champion Hotwiredotcom.
Dan and Kaye have named many of their horses after their seven grandchil- dren—CRM Livewire is named for granddaughter Callie Rose Malsbury.
They brought about 40 people with them to Lone Star Park for the Grade 1 Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity finals, including several relatives.
Fortunately, they had bet-
ter weather than on the night of the trials.
“They qualified in absolutely a lake,” said Kaye in recalling the rainy conditions. “It was so wet on the track. It was kind of tough, but we stood out in the win picture anyway.”
Live Moonshine, a gelded son of CRM Livewire, had earlier won the April 28 American Paint Classic Futurity-G1 at Remington Park where he dueled and held on for the victory in the $147,548 contest.
He was the fastest qualifier to the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity at Remington Park with a 1 1/4-length victory. Unfortunately, he had to
be scratched from the June 2 $254,275 Grade 1 finals.
“He qualified for the Graham, and for some reason Matt decided to have an X-ray of his legs,” stated Kaye. “He had a little stress fracture in his shin. We couldn’t take a chance with him, so we missed that one, which was sad because he ran the fastest time in the trials. We turned him out and let that heal, and
he’s come back really well.”
Live Moonshine returned so strongly that,
in winning his trial for the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, he once again qualified the fastest with a powerful 1/2-length trial victory.
Cody Smith has ridden the gelding in all his starts except one, and the jockey was back aboard for the finals of this race.
When the gates opened, Live Moonshine broke seventh from the five-post, but then he started passing rivals.
He poured it on at the end of the 400 yards to win by a narrow head in :19.926. However,
