Eleven three years or older Mexican speci- mens were registered for this race that had a purse of $222,700 pesos (approximately $11,723 US) to be run at 330 yards. Purina Mexico contributed 18% of the prize. Beside the Select Auction final and consolation, this was the stakes of the Sixth Breeder’s Cup with more participants and better purse to hand out.
The track, almost impassable by the recent rain, received the contestants and their riders.
In such conditions, the start and subsequent trajectory was somewhat erratic for N Quick Bars (#3), who rammed La Nostalgia (#2) and Mr Squeeze (#5), who shot towards LM Tres Famous (#4). Meanwhile, SF Top Class Heart (#7) came out late and his rider preferred to find the right side of the track to run.
The sorrel Comopower (#1), however, made no errors and took the opportunity to lead the competition by a narrow margin, very close to the inside rail under the effective assistance of Yair Daniel Báez Soto. The pair endured the pressure of the group and the discomfort of
the water and mud all the way, crossing first by a nose in front of the gelding T Henry Gucci
(#11), who moved with total freedom with Francisco Javier Fernández in the controls, concluding ahead by just
a small difference over
Coronaontheroksjr, who closed in third.
The race was run in
:16.55 for an 88 speed
index and marked the fifth
victory for Comopower
and the first under the
ownership and training
of Rancho Las Gaviotas,
who has owned him since
last April. In 14 starts at
the track, this is the first
stakes added to his record
after trying in futurities and derbies reserved for auctioned Mexican runners. Bred in Cuadra La Presita by Dr. Anselmo Aguilar, who was present at the awards ceremony, Comopower is by Four Six Power (by Mr Jess Perry) and out of Corona Dot Com by Corona Cartel.
The prize for his effort was $133,620 pesos (approximately $ 7,044 US), also
adding points to the record of trainer Efraín Anastasio Valdivia López, who was
responsible for saddling him for this commitment.
Making a great race, second place was won by T Henry Gucci (Toss Me A Corona-Henry Gucci) under Francisco Javier Fernández for Cuadra Samago. The gelding is trained by José Marcelo González Godínez and was bred by Rancho Hacienda Santiago.
Coronaontherocksjr (Corona On The Rocks-The Fortuneteller) was third under the command of Alan Alexis Rizo. The gelding is owned
by Granja La Esperanza, trained by Julián Gutiérrez, and was bred by Margarito Rojas.
