RP LIL BROWN WAGON
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
When the Alfredo Castro Rea Classic trials were run, few noticed the colt RP Lil Brown Wagon who ran second in the fifth and final heat 1-length behind the filly Notorious Brown, the fastest qualifier in :16.983 of the 39 participants at 350 yards.
The RP Lil Brown Wagon finished his trial in :17.089, which positioned him as the second fastest qualifier. By the Sept. 30 finals, preferences marked Notorious Brown (#10) as the favorite to win, considering - in addition to her excellent previous record - her position at the extreme right of the gate.
At the start, SC Baby Jess (#2) stumbled, while RP Lil Brown Wagon (#4) went to the inside, blocking Centurion D Master (#3). The race took its course, but soon the grey RP Lil Brown Wagon, who under the command of José Ángel Ambrosio Medina distanced himself from the rest with every stride, crossed the finish line 1 3/4-lengths ahead of the filly Moment Too Moment (#9), who quali- fied with the final time of the trials.
The winner made the journey in :17.18 (SI 99), getting his first stakes win in six races, having won his maiden on March 25. This win entitles him
to collect $724,290 pesos (approx. $38,237 US), which is the main part of the purse that amounted to $1,895,700 pesos (approx. $91,040 US).
RP Lil Brown Wagon was bred in the United States by Robert Pugh and is by PYC Paint Your Wagon and out of Fast Dash Tanisha by Heza Fast Dash. The colt was sold for $12,000 at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale, where he was purchased by MVZ Rachuán Suárez Kuri, later becoming the property of Cuadra El Manantial, for which he currently runs, where Anselmo Olopa
is responsible for his usual
sports preparation, and Jorge
Alberto Ruiz Peribán, who
saddled the colt for this race.
On behalf of the honoree Alfredo Castro Rea, his grandson Alfredo Castro Rodríguez was present and gave the owner of the colt a beautiful statue.
In second place was
Moment Too Moment (Lota
PYC-Britts Special Eyes)
with the assistance of Eddi
Cuéllar. The filly is owned
by Cuadra Armadillo and trained by Marcos Tomás Méndez. Moment Too Moment was first in her two previous outs.
MS Corona Doll (Corona Cartel-Fast Prize Doll) closed in third place with José Manuel Rosado aboard. The filly is owned by Cuadra El Mashta and was saddled by trainer Rafael Rizo Ojeda.
The other finalists were: SC Baby Jess (One Sweet Jess–Built For Fun), Notorious Brown (Dash Master Jess–Favored), ENB
Sheza Mountain (DMNV Mountable–Sheza Cartel), VH Ice (Valiant Hero–
Icy Valentine), VF Great Domination (Dominyun– Next Great Love), Eyell Cartel (Teller Cartel–Eyell Fool Ya) and Centurion D Master (Dash Master Jess – Ivory Riches).
