MARNEY JO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The Félix Bañuelos Jiménez Classic was held in honor of Mexican breeder and horseman Félix Bañuelos Jiménez. With seven 3-year-
old runners, the 300-yard race was contested on Sept. 9 and had a purse of $321,300 pesos ($16,719 approx. US). Two of the favorites were Gulf Coast Streaker (#5), who is an established runner since his 2-year-old season, and the filly Marney Jo (#4) with a soaring athletic career and good results in her short record.
At the start, Marney Jo stumbled signifi- cantly and, in her recovery, made contact with Absolutely Brilliant (#3), while Gulf Coast Streaker left late. The filly recovered and
took the lead well supported by Eddi Cuéllar, showing in each stride a superiority over her main rival who reached the wire 1 1/2-lengths behind the fast runner. Marney Jo stopped the clock at :14.93 (SI 105), just 0.04 hundredths of a second to equal the track record.
By Corona Cartel and out of Executive Looks by Executive Menace, Marney Jo scored her second triumph this year since March 4 when she came in first in the First Maiden Stakes in her debut at the Hipódromo de
las Américas. On July 1, she returned in the AQHA Derby Challenge in Mexico where
she finished second, but was subsequently
disqualified. Two weeks later, she won an allowance, scor- ing :12.82 at 250 yards.
The filly is owned by
Rancho El Suspiro, who
acquired her from MVZ
Rachuán Suárez Kuri, who in
turn imported her from the
United States after acquiring
her at the Ruidoso Yearling
Sale. Her season as a 2 year
old was carried out in match-
races, where she won the Chiapas Futurity Championship in 2017.
For first place in the Félix Bañuelos Jiménez Clasico there was a reward of $192,780 pesos (approx. $10,031 US), also adding points for trainer Bernardo Manuel Fragoso.
Winner of multiple stakes, Gulf Coast Streaker (Rock Solid Jess-Ladys Streaker) took second under the direction of José Manuel Cisneros. The colt is owned by Cuadra Díaz de León and is trained by Epifanio Carrasco Sandoval.
Third place went to Cruising Paris (Corona Cartel-First Prize Paris) with Juan Carlos García on top. The gelding runs for Rancho Amecameca and was saddled by trainer Marlon
Abraham Quezada Colunga. Also having participated: Absolutely Brilliant (Corona
Cartel–Royally Streak), Teller Hesa Corona (Teller Cartel– Eyes Trick Too), Shootin Star (Walk Thru Fire–Priscilla Ione), & Chiris The Breez (Chiris Corona–Call Me The Breez). Runaway For First was scratched.
