It was a short, but absolutely perfect campaign. Jess Good Candy never lost in four starts at two and left the best for last—a sterling performance in the All American Futurity-G1.
Winning the titles of Champion 2 Year
Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Colt was well-deserved as well as poignant. The late
Carl Pevehouse created a dynasty of Candy- named horses, and many developed into stakes winners. Carl died in 2014, a year before his All American victory.
Rozella and Cheryl Pevehouse, Carl’s wife and daughter, have kept Carl’s dream alive, and they tearfully accepted Jess Good Candy’s Championship awards.
“It’s a tribute to my husband, who worked so hard to keep the Candy line going,” said Rozella.
Cheryl and her father nursed Jess Send Candy, the dam of Jess Good Candy, after she ran a stick into a back foot. Though that ended the filly’s racing career, their efforts saved her life and she has become an outstanding broodmare.
Carl bred Jess Good Candy in Oklahoma. Clint Crawford trained the colt for Carl’s estate. Jess Good Candy began his career at Remington Park with a sparkling 1-length win in a 300- yard maiden race.
Jess Good Candy spent the rest of his 2-year-old season at Ruidoso Downs. He won his trial for the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 against a headwind. At the time of the trial, he was the fifth-fastest qualifier. But as the winds died down, horse after horse beat his time, and he lost his berth to the final in the 17th race.
Crawford waited for the All American trials instead of going in the Ruidoso Futurity consolation. Jess Good Candy managed to win his trial and qualify despite receiving severe bumps from both sides.
“He almost stopped,” said Rozella. “Then that fortitude started, and he won that race. He’s got heart, and he’s strong.”
Carl’s family traveled to Ruidoso to witness Jess Good Candy and jockey Ivan Carnero
in the All American Futurity final. Jess Good Candy overcame another bump, shot to the lead, and held off favored One Fabulous Eagle to win by a neck.
“It was just phenomenal to be there,” said
Rozella. Jess Good Candy wins the All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs
