Ima Fearless Hero, may be a half-brother to World Champion Heza Dasha Fire, but he can stand on his own four feet as the Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding of 2015.
Kathy and Don Meneely and their son, Shawn, would have had an incredible year with just Heza Dasha Fire. But along came Ima Fearless Hero to add even more excitement, along with cementing the quality of their broodmare Dasha Freda.
The Meneely family bred Ima Fearless Hero in Washington, and like Heza Dasha Fire, Ima Fearless Hero went to trainer Jose Flores. He runs in the name of the Meneelys’ S-Quarter K LLC.
Ima Fearless Hero began his racing career as a colt, running second in an April 17 maiden race at Los Alamitos. Flores didn’t feel that the youngster was concentrating on his job and recommended gelding him. Kathy resisted the suggestion, but Don agreed with the trainer.
“The horse had conformation and balance, but his mind wasn’t on running,” said Flores.
Ima Fearless Hero’s first stakes victory came in the Ed Burke Juvenile. That was just a warm-up for what he would accomplish the rest of the year.
Another change helped when Kathy suggested that Ima Fearless Hero needed a smaller blinker on his left eye because of his tendency to drift in.
“I thought it was because he would get ahead of his rivals and would then start going inside because he couldn’t see them,” she said.
Ima Fearless Hero qualified second fastest for the PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity-G2 when acing his trial by an easy 1 3/4-lengths. As the 9-10 favorite in the final under regular jockey Cruz Mendez, he blasted home on top by 1/2-length.
The next dances were big ones—the trials and final of the Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1. When Ima Fearless Hero soared in his trial by 2 1/4-lengths, the stage was set for the final showdown.
Ima Fearless Hero didn’t break on top this time and had to catch Docs Best Card. He didn’t let his connections or the bettors down, though, nailing Docs Best Card by a neck at the wire.
