If there is one thing the Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year Award has done, it HAS proven that great broodmares don’t just happen, they are a lifetime in the making.
The 2013 winner, Last Shall Be First, hailed from Spencer Childers’ legendary California breeding program. This year’s champion, Look Her Over, is a shining testament to another storied West Coast breeder – Edward Allred.
Allred, who owns Rolling A Ranch in Atascadero, California, is Quarter Horse racing’s all-time leading breeder. He has been named the
American Quarter Horse Association’s (AQHA) Champion Breeder nine times and Champion Owner six times. He was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2006 and is perhaps best known as the owner of Los Alamitos
Race Course in Cypress, California, where he watched his first Quarter Horse race in 1956.
Allred bought his first racehorse in the early 1960s, but had to sell his horses when he was drafted in 1965. One of the horses he sold was Punch Time, a mare he had tried unsuccessfully to breed to Windy Sea.
“I was becoming a student of pedigrees, and I thought Quarter Horse breeders should breed to him. Nobody had at that point,” Allred said of Windy Sea.
While serving in Vietnam, Allred learned Punch Time was, in fact, in foal to Windy Sea. He wasted no time in buying her back. Allred’s foresight was rewarded with a filly he named Gritch.
“She ran successfully, won some races, and then she had several good foals for me, including Ritch Gritch, a filly by Dusty
